Top 10 Places to Go in 2008 - MSN Travel Articles

The Okanagan Valley makes MSN's top 10 list of places to visit. One of only two North American destinations to make the list.

Next year's event will be bigger and better. Saturday afternoon and evening will be re-organized - caterers are on board to feed us first, and we will cruise later while everyone else is in line for food.

We will be able to leave our SSRs on the grass Friday and Saturday night. I have booked a security firm to watch them, eliminating the logistics of parking at the hotel.

We will have a cover charge of $25/SSR to cover the costs of the tent, security and some refreshments. Any extra money will be used to fund more prizes for our draws. Mail checks to Ray Lamothe, Box 1619, Summerland, B.C. V0H 1Z0. Same amount in Can or US$ US postage to Canada is now 72 cents

The Peach City Beach Cruise is in its eigth year, with 451 cars participating in the 2007 show. Based on early registrations, we expect at least 550 cars this year. Many participants come back every year. The Classical Glass Corvette club from Washington has been here for several years. One participant freights several vehicles from Vancouver Island every year. His personal collection in 2007 included a Ford GT, Prowler, Viper, and a Ron Fellows Edition Z06 Corvette. The Cruise has seen large groups travel great distances. One group of cars two years ago (9 cars, if I remember correctly) came from Salt Lake City.

The setting is spectacular. The car show is staged from the Lakeside Resort Hotel (The long pier at the center of the photo) all the way to the SS Sicamous, at the far right, just before the river channel.

We will be using the same park area to the right of the hotel on the photo below. We'll be just off the beach, on grass, directly across from the outdoor entertainment area and concessions.

Entry fee is $50 Canadian ($50 US) per vehicle and includes two steak dinners in a large tent across the street from the hotel on Saturday night, free entertainment all weekend, a poker run on Friday afternoon, the Parade of Iron through the city Friday night, an evening show and shine Friday night, the car show Saturday and a Cruise on Saturday afternoon. Breakfast is available at a nominal cost on Saturday and Sunday. The award ceremony is at 11:00 AM Sunday, ending approximately 12:30.

I would recommend pre-registration. Makes the process much smoother when you arrive. Category entered: SSR.

They aren't set up for VISA or MC - their cost would be quite high, and your VISA or MC provider will nick you for the foreign transaction. They will accept checks for pre-registration, or cash at the site. As per supersleuth Sue, US postage to Canada is 72 cents.

The Poker Run Friday afternoon was to 9 wineries and the pub in the Naramata area. First prize was a case of wine, secondwas 1/2 case. SSRFanatic Frankmp from Edmonton won the case of wine in 07. Reports from participants in the poker run are very positive. It's an all-day event - you can rush through, or stop anywhere along the way and enjoy some wine tasting or scenery. Cards must be turned it at the SS Sicamous registration center by 5:00 PM

New info May 18th - Woody, the owner of the Z06, Ford GT, Prowler, Viper and other great vehicles likes the wine cruise so much he has added $600 of his own to increase the value of the wine cruise prizes. First is now a case of wine and $300, second is 1/2 case plus $200, and booby prize (worst hand) is One bottle of wine and $100. Thanks, Woody!!!!

Hotels

The Lakeside Resort Hotel is a luxury hotel on the Beach. It has a pub, the Magnums restaurant indoors, a patio eating area, and the Hooded Merganser Restaurant built over the water. It also has a Casino.

If you check the photo of the hotel on the link below, the park area is just over top of the Hooded Merganser restaurant on the right, past the giant tree.

Welcome to the Penticton Lakeside Resort - Home

I have booked 60 rooms at the Lakeside - 30 lakeview @ $180 Canadian/night, 30 street side @ $160 Canadian/night. This is a very good price during prime tourist season, and only a $5.00 increase per room over the 2007 rate. I would appreciate if all those prepared to commit to coming next year would post their intention to do so on this thread and book their rooms under SSR Fanatic, Group code 6380. Rooms are available Thursday through Sunday. The hotel's toll free number is 1 800-663-9400, ext 1 [color="Red"][size="3"]The hotel is sold out but if you still want to come to Penticton, call them in case a room has become available, or PM me that you are coming, and we will find you a room within 15 minutes of the show.

Seems like Zia's was also a good choice - they can handle up to 80 people, but anything beyond 40 or so will required pre-booking meals. I have booked Zia's for Thursday, June 19th.

Zias - Menu Poll

Thank you all for your positive comments on how this first Beach Cruise went. I had a ball putting this together, and was in awe watching all 41 of our SSRs rolling in. The show organizers were very pleased with our contribution to the event. It can only get better.

Name Tags - Please keep your name tags from the 2007 Beach Cruise. Sue will make nametags for new participants, but there should be no need for her to re-do last year's tags.
