I edited my post because I thought we had only exceeded an average of 1.0 vehicles per household in the '80s. Turns out it as much earlier. I found a link that had a table with some interesting stats:

Do More Vehicles Make More Miles: A snapshot analysis of the NHTS 2001

Basically, we're increasing the amount we drive annually in addition to having more cars per household being driven those greater amounts.
