Question Temp Guage

Need a little help here.....Took a hour long drive yesterday in the hot New Orleans sunshine and temp guage was fine the whole way until I got close to home. I was stopped at a stop light and the temp guage jumped to around 230 degrees or so. I unfortunately did not check to see if the fan was running or not. The help I need is: Is there a way to check the fan to ensure its operation before I take it in to a dealer and possibly get taken? My SSr is still under warrenty but I just want to make sure. Any help would be greatly appereciated. Would like to get this taken care of prior to any long planned trips.

Thanks,
