At $40k there is certainly less market than at $30k where GM wanted to be with tax incentives. But there are plenty of people who just want to get off of gas, but don't want to worry about getting stuck somewhere when the battery runs out.

You can always modify anything!
I'm sure that you could put capacitors in that will give you a faster 0-60...although it will go 0-60 faster than a stock '04 SSR anyway.
You could probably put better batteries in too...
To make it go faster, you just need to put more electricity to the wheels. As far as going further, the original plan was to put a tank in for a 600 mile range. They may have just swapped in smaller tank, which means there could still be space for you to take out the smaller tank and put one the size that was originally supposed to go in.
