This is rather just thinking out loud with no experience or particular basis for this. What if all the slats were removed and a "wet" carpet cleaner were used?
It doesn't take much of anything to be unable to be picked up by a vacuum as we all know and pretty much pick individual bits out by fingernails after any dirt is removed so it shouldn't come as a surprise regular vac won't work.
