When I researched this aboiut 4 years ago, I ended up talking to the applications engineer that worked on the SSR mirror. he said that GM originally wanted to go with the top-of-the-line mirror that had all the bells and whistles. They (Gentex) developed the mirror that worked with the halo lighting and had the homelink in it. They also tried to get the compass/temperature option to go into the mirror. It was OK, except that the compass got really confused when you changed the position of the steel top..... as in put it up or down. The compass would correct for the change in steel after a it went in a full 360 rotation, but just didn't trip their trigger. It was going to be a permanent problem and they chose to eliminate it from the mirror. Personally, I would have been willing to put up with the recalibration.
There are a couple of other options that you could consider..... You can throw a lot of money at it by pulling one of the gauges out of your console aux gauge kit (if you have one) and installing the 2 1/16" gauge from Dakota Digital. Both of these have temperature and compass. Both are over $300..

Another option you could consider is to get a GPS. It will have the compass included and will get you home from wherever you are.
Lots of choices..... temp/compass mirror, additional gauge, GPS.... My personal favorite is the Visa card... If I get lost or end up someplace unexpected and it's dinner time, I buy dinner for Deb and me.... and find a hotel for the nite...... Adventures in traveling
