I was seeking some advice from SSR enthusiasts. I don't know where a better place to look would be than here.
My father passed away (He's a member of these forums somewhere, I believe I've seen links to this place on his comp)
So the SSR is now mine. Problem is, I don't know anything about cars. I'm unfortunately not an SSR enthusiast and I don't want to get screwed if I decide to sell.
All I know about the car is, it's silver above black, 2005 pretty high miles around 80k but it was babied and garage kept. It's in pristine shape from what I can tell. It's also a stick shift.
I'm beginning to think this car will find a good home to a much better person than myself. It's a gorgeous car and I'm tempted to try and just keep it. But, at this point, the bad outweighs the good for my situation.
I don't want to blindly start tossing out details. So, any help on where to begin?
First off... sorry about your father's passing...my condolenses.
My advice as limited as it is.. take your time.. don't rush into anything... take a look around the site... do your research...drive it some.. get a feel for it. Then decide if you want to keep it or sell it. Maybe find a fanatic in your area to talk with.. see what is available to you.. and then just go from there..
Oh yeah. My dad also told me that he played with the engine. Don't know the specs. But according to him, the speedometer doesn't go high enough to show how fast it goes.

Many thanks! It's hard for someone who doesn't really know much about cars at all. I feel so overwhelmed.
I mean I'd LOVE to keep this car. But he owes just a little bit on the note because he leased then transferred to finance and wasn't quite done paying it off. The note is quite high as he expected to pay it off quickly. So paying that note monthly is out of the question for me at this point.
But it's worth a lot more than what he owes from what I have learned. I have found that this is a very special vehicle to many people.
My SSR: #23198 06 Blue 3SS #375 of 532 - Birthday 12/21/05 - Took delivery 9/5/06 (2nd owner)
LT has provided good advice. Your location can help you/us find someone near you who might be able to help you with advice. If you can post the VIN# we can find the important specs on the delivery options and help figure out what changes your father made which will help determine value. I doubt if you could have found a better place to ask for help.
My condolences on your loss and best wishes no matter what you decide to do.

I don't suppose there's any harm in posting the vin.

I just hope whatever he did to make the engine faster doesn't harm the value. I don't really have any way of telling what he did to enhance the car. He was a very private man. All I really do know is he bought custom foose wheels for it. They appear to be around 19-20 inch.
Sorry about your dads passing. I'll be willing to bet your dad kept a file on all the mods done to his SSR including receipts. I'm sure a local Fanatic will step up & give you some assistance determining what you have.
My SSR: 2006 Racy Aqua Blur 6spd Front end all Chrome/SS Tuned/ported
So sorry for your loss of your Dad
I would also think your Dad had a file for the mods and any work done, receipts etc. .... Now that we have the vin, Cash or someone will be posting some more info. Good luck! PS - 80K miles isn't high for an LS2 engine. Just well broke in for a pampered Truck. Several hundred thousand miles easily left to its credit. Keep in touch.
My SSR: 05 6 sp. with 4.56 gears, ZR1 clutch, Edelbrock intake, Lunati cam, Crane rockers, C6 modified pan
I'm Sorry for your loss and understand your emotions! As was previously mentioned, you may be able to re-negotiate the loan, if you'd like to keep the R. As was also mentioned, take a good look around for a file that your Dad may have kept with receipts in it, as that would be very valuable in determining the modifications done.
I also own an 05 6 speed, so if you're in need of an opinion you're quite Welcome to cruise it out to Whitmore Lake and I'll be glad to give it a once over. I'm right off of US 23 half way between Brighton and Ann Arbor. Simply PM me or call @ 734 449 2852.
Best of Luck with whatever you decide!

Its a nice looking truck! One modification that sticks out is the paint: Silver over Black, and 2005 Model Year (VIN 1GCES14H15B119855), implies that it has a custom aftermarket paint job, as the Silver over Black paint was only available as an option on 2006 SSRs from GM.

19 inch Wheels on the front and 20 Inch on the back are standard sizes for the SSR.

Caviet Emptor!!
I would recommend that anyone interested be sure to fully vet the details before committing to a deal.
This is a "legacy" car because it's connected to your father. It may be an item you have to sell because of money owed, but take your time in your decision. Google like crazy and do your research. Try to find everything your father did to the SSR with records he may have kept and let others know what was exactly done to the car. I know my son may receive my SSR if something happens to me and I hope he keeps it for a while to understand the love I have for it. I wish you nothing but the best in your journey in selling the vehicle, but I do hope you drive it around a little to feel the experience your dad had with it and appreciate what it meant to him. Take the memories with you and always feel his presence with every turn and stop. I live in Metro-Detroit and if you want to meet for lunch or dinner to discuss your plans I'll be more than happy to assist you. As far as finding a "much better person than yourself," there isn't a better person than his son and I'm sure he felt that way. God bless.
Wonderful advice and I'm gonna start following a lot of it.
About the paint job being custom, I dunno. My grandmother (his mom) kept saying it was only one of two cars in America of that color. I haven't been able to find anything else about that. But I do know I've never seen his car a different color. He could have got the paint done, but I just doubt it. I think he waited a while for that one.
Another problem is the "driving it" part. I never learned to drive a manual. So I am practicing, but still way too green to take it far from the house.
I really appreciate all of you guys help in this! I also need to find my dad's user name on these forums, maybe that will give me a hint of what he did to the engine too.
A user name would be very helpful - it would then be possible to see previous posts and learn more about the man and the vehicle.
As Zane said, if it's a factory two-tone, it would need to be a 2006. The VIN is definitely 05, which would indicate aftermarket paint, unless it was a test vehicle for the color combination that we hadn't heard about. If in fact GM did build it on 05, it would be a very interesting truck. A total of 134 were built in that color combination in 06. Being from the Detroit area, almost anything is possible. GM did build a one-off orange truck in 05 for the President of ASC, but even that one started production as a black truck.
Now that the VIN has been posted, our local Dr Digit, Cash, should be able to pull up whatever information is available about it on his system, and likely even the user name.
Good luck making a decision on the truck.
I know it's a bit chilly in Michigan this time of year, but before you sell it, spend a bit of time on a parking lot getting familiar with the 6 speed, then take it out for a top down cruise. Once you listen to that purring sound and play with the gears, you might reconsider selling it.
I have a silver on black 6 speed. Can't get enough of looking at it in the garage this time of year.

WELCOME, KGWYNN . . . from Southern Arizona.
I'm with the others on here so far . . . don't sell unless absolutely necessary. Six months or maybe even a year or so from now once the dust has settled, you may be kicking yourself for doing so.
As for your Dad's SSRFanatics User Name . . . I bet contacting Marc in NY with his e-mail address, or addresses, may help. Also, try logging on the site with your Dad's computer as the system remembers all of that stuff . . . most of the time.

I bet if you send Hot Rod Girl a PM, she will no somebody that can help you. She live in the Detroit area. She is a great lady and will be of some help to you.
Just take off in 2nd gear using a little throttle until you get the feel of the clutch engagement. Then Do some starts in 1st gear. Easy as pie
So it is fine to start driving the car in 2nd? I am terrified to strip that trans or something. As I said, I don't know much about cars. Trying to learn extremely quickly. My mom is very good at manuals and she's showed me how to operate so far.
My uncle said something about 1st gear not even being worth using or something like that.

Chill. You dont have to know a thing about cars except to keep it between the ditches.
YES, starting out in 2nd with a little throttle is no problem. Where did you hear the 'strip the gears' fear? Urban legend. Start in 2nd with light throttle -Get use to the engagement of the clutch and then use the 1st gear when you have ''shifting feeling'' established. Maybe two days of trails in the neighborhood..
Nothing to be afraid of. Easy peasy.
Also, I just talked to lawyer and apparently I cannot do ANYTHING at all until I get a court order from Probate. This will happen in the morning.
But as far as getting to know this SSR of mine, I still appreciate any help at all learning about it.
I talked to my grandmother again and she is very sure that my dad never painted the car. What happened according to her, is he got the "demo" car right off the dealer's floor. The dealer told them that it was the only car of that color in the area at that time in 2005.
The only sure thing is my father never painted the car. Maybe the dealer did? Who knows. But it came in silver over black and it was some sort of demo.

I've heard numerous people say "you don't want to strip the gears". I didn't know it was a myth. That is very helpful.
There are a lot of supercharged SSRs out there, with some fairly aggressive drivers, including our lady friend in Florida.
I have never heard of a transmission blowing up, even with the extra 100 or so horsepower. Even a couple of owners with supercharger and nitrous have yet to grenade a tranny, even with hard starts on the dragstrip. I wouldn't worry about it.
I'm not a big fan of the start in 2nd idea. The clutch takes a lot less abuse from feathering if you're working in first.
I have 410 gears instead of the stock 373s, and still use first all the time.

As Flash mentioned, 2nd gear starts are not a good idea with the SSR clutch, as it's been known to be problematic. Also, the clutch fluid needs to be flushed with some regularity, as it becomes contaminated and alters the clutch feel somewhat. At 80k miles it's way overdue if it hasn't been done before.

Only talking about learning the clutch feel starting in 2nd for a few times, wont do any damage. NADA, Not driving all the time in 2nd, The Fanatic is developing a learning curve, Not blowing off the line at 4grand like Anne the clutch killer...

You may indeed have a demo or test vehicle of some sort...in which case you have a gem in more ways than one!! Just know that Silver over Black on a 2005 was not a normal color for that year! As Flassh said, hopefully Cash can chime in with a build sheet and/or detail on this one. I am curious now!
I will add my voice to the chorus of NOT starting out in 2nd gear. My experience with my 2005 Manual Trans SSR was that it is best to start in 1st given the questionable clutch these trucks have.
