I did wake him up - but this truck was completely off his radar, which is really rare, so he was waiting for a build sheet on it.

Fale is pretty much on top of the pilot trucks, and felt as I did, that it was very unlikely to have been a pilot truck, more likely a dealer repaint.

I'm sure he'll have more to report really soon.

We are very lucky to have fabulous member like Cash!! Hotrodgirl is not much on the site anymore due to family issues. (she lives in Sterling Heights) But if you'd like I can contact her for ya & see if she has any good recommendations for you in Detriot.

Sorry, I had an unusually busy day. Normally my busy day is being on this site for 7 or 8 hours!
I do not show any record of this VIN ever being posted on this forum so your father never requested a build sheet or made note of the VIN as a member. At this time all I can do is pretty much concur with what has been said by others thus far.
I have viewed a CarFax and there is nothing out of the ordinary. It shows 2 owners but that would be because the lease company would be considered the first owner. The second owner would be your father when he paid out the lease and it was officially transferred to his name, about 3 years ago.
I don't have the ability to run Build Sheets so we will have to wait for Marc to run it, probably tomorrow morning.
Never say never but:
I have accounted for all 62 MY2005 pilots and this was not one of them. To my knowledge there were never any "test" trucks for the TuTone paint process. I think we will find this SSR was built 1.19.2005 (which was smack in the middle of when the 43 Daytona 500's were built). There were no WD1 Pilots anywhere near this VIN, and almost all pilots were built in groups, albeit sometimes small groups. As previously noted there were no factory production TuTones in MY2005. I am very sure this left the lansing Craft Centre as a monotone, likely and it is quite possible the dealer added the bottom .
If you know who the delivering dealer was I don't mind calling them to see if I can find out the history.

I just noticed that the chevy dealer is right on his keychain lol. Maybe the dealer may know more about what the car's paint origins were. I'll try tomorrow. But if Cash doesn't mind doing it, I'd really love that. I don't even know what to ask. Cash seems to know quite a bit about these cars.

But I am positive my dad bought it the way it looks. If it's painted, someone painted it before my dad got it.

(just noticed cash's reply)

The dealer is Les Stanford Dearbon, MI. 313 5656000.

I guess the whole paint thing isn't going to kill me. It would just be nice to know I have a rare car. That might determine how I go from here. I personally have never seen a silver/black in any combination here. I've seen some solid blue, solid yellow and maybe some custom colors now and then. I actually don't see this car too often at all.

I managed to get over my childish fears and drive it to the store. It actually wasn't bad. I felt like a champion when everyone looked my way.

Here is an old Les Stanford post.

http://www.ssrfanatic.com/forum/58328-post1.html

Les Stanford Chevy was very active on the forum promoting lots of SSR's. They had 2 or 3 of the Brickyards as I recall.
I will call the sales manager tomorrow, and hope the same guy is still there. If they did do the paint I imagine he will remember as the SSR and Corvette were a large part of their sales program.

Good for you!! I know the feeling... my truck is an 03...8 years I've had it.. & I still get looks, thumbs up, people taking my picture, questions about "what is that?" It is quite a hoot!! Make me smile! It is a special truck... enjoy the moments you have with it!

If you drive it, you better get used to people looking at you. It is great fun driving something that people appreciate and admire, especially when it a hoot to drive as well. Depending on where you live they can be quite a rarity. However, I don't believe we will find your SSR to be any more rare than a lot of 2005 SSR's but don't let that disappoint you. Just being lucky enough to own one sets you apart from most, as having any SSR is rare.
I believe it was LT that suggested you should talk to the bank about refinancing. You should probably do this regardless of your decision so the payments do not become burdensome, forcing you to make a decision.
I'll let you know what I find out from Les Stanford tomorrow
.

Thanks to MarcNY for the Build Sheet: http://www.ssrfanatic.com/forum/1040265-post2414.html

Looks like it was coded Black at build time, and based upon the list of items completed, perhaps the dealer painted the upper part of the truck silver?

Interesting that the crankshaft has been replaced a few times..among other things.

I spoke with Scott Montgomery @ Les Stanford and he immediately knew which SSR (one of two) I was referring to.
ASC did take 2 new SSR's and made one S/B and the other B/S. I understand ASC installed the wheels also.
It appears this one had hood and tonneau paint issues from day one @ LCC which made it an ideal candidate for the paint procedure.
In summary, this was a black SSR when it left LCC, sent to ASC for the TuTone process and wheel install and then to Les Stanford Chevrolet where it was sold new as a to Mr Gwynn.
It would still be considered a factory built SSR but can be stated it was purchased new as a
I am trying to obtain the VIN for the second one.

And another secret comes to light through this wonderful site. This information needs to be passed along with the vehicle if it is sold. CASH is still KING (of VIN information, at least).

That's good to know! Batman like detective skills.

So... is this a good thing? Or it doesn't really change anything?

I guess what I'm asking is, does this make my car unique by being the first silver and black in 2005? Or does it just mean someone painted it.

Either way, I'm glad to know that my family was right that my dad bought it new in that color. They said the only other silver/black went to some executive for Chevy. So it was only two of them.

Actually, it sounds like the only other was the reverse combination, black over silver, so yours was the only silver over black.
However, when it comes to heritage value, GM's official stand is the only TuTones were MY2006's, because they were the only ones that left the factory (Lansing Craft Centre) as Tutones. The 1st was 1GCES14H66B121361.
Yours is unique, and it was done by ASC, a partner in the SSR program, but it still will not be recognized as #1. It is like the orange MY2005 SSR that Flassh mentioned earlier. It is unique, but officially it is a black SSR that was repainted outside the factory by ASC. It remains to be seen what value the Orange one would have on the market, but it definitely would be more than if it had remained in its' orignal black colour.
As to value, I have no idea if it will be affected by this uniquity, but at 80k miles my opinion is it would be limited. Others may disagree
You have a great truck with some unique heritage. Hopefully you can keep it and enjoy it.

By the way, reading through this thread I can't help but notice that quite a number of people have said some very complimentary things about me and I do appreciate it!

You should feel proud. This was amazing for me personally.

I would have not known what to do without your help. I have yet to find a file with my father's modifications and repairs. You guys did.

I still don't know what he did to modify and enhance the engine tho. I don't think it was on that list of repairs. But I know that he specifically told me that he did some stuff to it.

I'd like to know what ASC is tho. I haven't seen it explained... that or I missed it.

Even if it's not an official factory original, it kinda makes me happy to know my car just maybe the first SSR with Silver over black.

ASC Inc was formerly known as the American Sunroof Corp.
The association with GM is documented a bit in the LCC Timeline, but they had a lot to do with the SSR build.

Lansing Craft Centre Timeline

It appears your father had some engine problems as there was a crankshaft replacement twice. It is likely that if modifications were done it would have been at one of the times when it was stripped down.

You should be working for GM in some capacity. This looks more like a career than a hobby. Great work.

Beautiful car. Hold onto it for 6 months. Play around with it a little. If you do not fall in love with it, as Linda says, then sell it to me for a reasonable price.

All up to the loan folks. If they are willing to help me, they can extend the rest of his payments and lower them to something affordable for me. My dad made much better money than I.

If push comes to shove, and I come in to some decent money out of the estate, (which is unknown for sure). Then I'll pay it off because it appears to be worth doing after all the great work here.

Wow! Congratulations Marc!
I imagine GM would be a pretty cool company to have spent an entire career with.
