What price to pay

Believe it or not, I have been a loyal porsche owner for years. I always have had a four wheel drive vehicle for practicality and a sporty toy.

I have not owned an American car since I was 18 in 1984. That was a camaro Z28. I am about to trade in my boxster for a chevy ssr. The iconic styling is great, the new engine and the six speed option is the main reason I am ready to make the move. The practical utility is just icing on the cake.

I know I'll never get the handling of the Porsche, but that's not why i'm here.

I have a 2 pm appointment with my chevy dealer on wed., march 23. Can anyone tell me where the final price should fall in relation to dealer disclosed invoice. I intend to get a six speed if I go through with it, so please tell me if dealers are as generous with those versus the automatics.

All info will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance....the potential new guy

jgabriel66,

First of all, no matter what you pay, you will have more FUN in it than you ever did in the Camaro. The "rubberneck factor" is awsome!

And although this is strictly my opinion, as you can see on the SSR For Sale thread, anything from 2K to 4K less than sticker will be a fair deal for both of you. Anymore than that off, good for you!

Anyone else have comments?

jgabriel66, If you are shopping for a 2005 then I would do this first; go on chevrolet.com then click on "Trucks" then click on the SSR picture then on the left hand column click on"build my chevy" and then select a style base and then put in your zip code, then click "submit" ,scroll down and click on "continue" next click on "locate this vehicle" Walah ,Presto, Mucho Info
search each dealer in your area and print out the window sticker of the ones that meet your criteria . After a while you will know from the price what options it has and so only whether it is a stisk or auto wii determine a closer look. Once you have found 3 similar vehicles in a two hour drive from your house you are now able to wheel and deal. when you check out the car at the dealership dont be too excited but matter of fact . See how many miles are on the OD let them explain every thing about the vehicle and then take a test drive. They now know your serious. Sit down and tell them this is what I am willing to offer 5k off MSRP, they will come back and say they only have like 3K to go you mention that is true if you wern't counting the 3% holdback they get from GM on top of that ( works out to approx $1500) thats when they say thats to pay for the rent and lites and you say . Not this time " I am aware that these are not selling cuz they are over priced and GM went from making 70 to 40 per day so its your call, last chance before I go somewhere else that I have located the same vehicle ( don't say where though) they already know too. Then you must be ready to leave if they wont deal. They will ask is there a trade , are you gonna finance { thats another story} tell them yes if you are { might get more off} but watch out they will say they could only get you X% to try to make some other bonus points. NEVER give your phone # unless you want to be called and called and called.

If they want to deal they will. They will try to drag it out cuz they have all day thats why you must start low and go up not the other way.

hope this helps and let us know what happens and what you decide on.

The dealership can make the $ they didn't make on you on the next person that buys from them that didn't do any research. Remember they are getting rid of a slow moving vehicle in a tightening market. look what happened to the 04's, well 06 is just arount the corner.

What price to pay

Here in California I paid invoice which is aprox. $ 3,000 off sticker for an automatic. It will depend on the area and the dealers inventory. Although the dealers make a big deal about selling at their "invoice", there are many dealer incentives and allowances, so only the dealer, Chevy and God really know what their true out of pocket costs are.

Don't get too hung up on getting every last dollar out of thedeal. I'm known for doing battle with dealers just for the fun of it, my wife won't go with me anymore, but once I drove my SSR it was give it to me for invoice and let me out of here with everyone happy.
Goo luck.

Which dealer did you buy it from? I was wondering as I see you got Aqua Blur and that is the color I am planning on getting and just wanted to make sure you did not take any of the ones I was looking at here in Southern California.

As I live in Claremont yes that was one of the ones I have been watching. I think the other one is a manual. Actually the ones at their dealership are all fully loaded and I do not want mine that fully loaded. Their prices are a little high and even though I get my Z06 serviced there and I said I would buy the next Z06 from them they would not give me a good enough deal to entice me to buy one from them.
