Cool Bolt Covers

Thanks Alex The covers look good. Sure worth $12, not only protects a head from scratches but looks good when showing a dressed up engine bay.

Alex that looks much better, keep up the great work and continue to share with the rest of us.
For those who have already gone custom, you could grind the studs back flush with the nut face and use the chrome nut caps that Alex first used under the hood. It would make another clean but shorter look.

Ed,

At first that is what I considered was to grind the studs down, because I did not like how long they were. I agree, the "shorter" look would be even better, with the chrome caps placed directly on the nuts. However, as fragile as that whole assembly seems to be, and several fanatics have had problems with breakage, I was real skeptical of stressing the studs/supports and possibly weakening them. But then, I'm certainly not nearly as adept nor as daring as you are with a grinder.

I just got another grille piece from Gary..vetteman64, and started to reinforce the back with fiberglass and high strength resin. These are very hard to find and have been on 'back order' for a long time. The reason they crack so easy is easy to see...cheap plastic with no backing support woven into the curve. Instant egg shell crack or crazing..

“I was real skeptical of stressing the studs/supports and possibly weakening them.” Good point Alex you are always thinking, I remember the first time I saw you. You where flat on your back in the middle of a parking lot. You installed about 12 sets of chrome trim on people’s trucks in Springfield (for free)

And you gave your still working rad fan away to some jerk standing watching you install Mikes new and inproved fan.

“The reason they crack so easy is easy to see...cheap plastic with no backing support woven into the curve. Instant egg shell crack or crazing.”
I wonder if the spray foam insulation used on home doors and windows would be easy to work with. Light weight, rigid and easy to cut flush with bread knife.

Maybe, But you with have better results with adding tensile strength. I have repaired surfboards with the mesh and resin. The grille pieces are also weakened in the design by the curve it uses to fit the front of the hood. Foam insulation is not a choice for this application. According to recent Consumer Reports..Handy Putty is OK but they listed other resins that were of higher strength. For the Home Depot types.. The fast acting repair resins for plumbing leaks that you could include in you review. Just use a reinforcing mesh to embed like aluminum window screen or a small grid fiberglass drywall tape. Lots of choices using common products Ace hardware to Advance auto parts. Little kits to fix a ding or strengthen existing. And keep it thin - no fancy buildup. Paint 1/4" of resin product then place fiberglass mesh and paint resin to the mesh with a 5/8" min cover coat. Done. Protect a part that is Hard to find with a little thought and effort. Then add the studs from Alex...

The photos of the studs have been showing a lack of maintenance, may I suggest to use Lithium. Spray or tube.

Alex, took the 2 mins to put mine on today, and they are one of those little things that are more noticable when they AREN'T there!
For me, I like people to look at my R and notice things, rather than the changes glaring at them. This fits that bill.
One of the three great lies: "the checks in the mail!"

Good job dude,

We'll I've come up with a solution that works for me on both counts. First, while this solution can't prevent you from hitting them with you head, nevertheless the blow and potential damage to your scalp should be substantailly minimized. Second, I believe that this solution dresses things up nicely.

If any of you are interested, I'm selling the set of 3 stud protectors for $12.00 to fanatics. The price includes shipping. What you will get is as follows:

1. Three (3) @ 1/2" long pieces of 3/8" diameter Taylor "Sho-Stuff" chrome split conduit.....the good stuff that doesn't flake or chip.
2. Three (3) chrome steel bolt caps with pre-glued in inserts forming a flush outer surface so that they are ready to be pushed on and screwed into place.

I've attached a close up photo of one of the installed assemblies. I've had mine on for about 1-1/2 months.

Send me a PM if interested.

Alex
