2013 International SSR Rally

The last duty of the 2011 International SSR Rally Committee is to choose the Committee for the 2013 International Rally.

Lloyd and Gerrie started this event in '07, in Springfield Missouri. They did it by themselves, remotely from SoCal where they live. Hats off to both of them, after hosting the 2011 Rally, I have a profound appreciation for what they did for the SSRFanatics!

Johna and Machell hosted the 2009 International Rally in Kerrville Texas in June of '09, a great time we had!

Duane and Elaine Morgan, Thumper and I hosted the 2011 International Rally in Flagstaff last week.

Time for new blood.....we need to choose a Committee to carry on the International Rally for 2013. We are soliciting proposals to host the 2013 International Rally, if you are interested in doing so, please PM me by October 15, 2011.

As of the Banquet last Thursday, the 2011 Committee had been approached by four separate individuals and/or groups to host the 2013 Rally, hats off to all interested parties, y'all are the best!

The decision will be made based on presentation and ability. Be advised that if you are considering this, you need to have access to a large credit card balance.....the 2011 Committee started making payments to Little America in March of 2010. Most of the funds to pay for the 2011 Rally came in within 60 days of the Rally. To give y'all an idea of what this Rally cost, including rooms, banquets, and on and on.....$ 100,000.00. With that kind of bargaining power, you should be able to make a great deal in the future, a huge shot in the arm to local economies. We will be happy to help with estimating costs for the next Rally, to ensure that there are no out of pocket costs from the Organizers, all you need to do is ask.

The voting for the best proposal for the 2013 International Rally will be performed by Elaine and Duane Morgan, Thumper and I as hosts of the 2011 Rally, Johna and Machell as hosts of the 2009 International Rally, and Lloyd and Gerrie as hosts of the 2007 Springfield Rally, to keep the voting fair and unbiased. If a tie-breaker vote is needed, Mike in AZ will cast the tie breaking vote. Mike is one of my very best friends, because he is 110% honest, and if necessary, will make a totally unbiased vote, based on his belief that the best proposal is successful.

Thank you very much, we look forward to choosing the hosts of the 2013 International SSR Rally!

One more note - everybody has an opinion on where the next International Rally should be held, please keep your opinions to yourselves and let those that wish to present a proposal have a chance to do so.

It does not matter where the event will be held, Fanatics will attend.

Thanks.

This is excellent info to share. Most folks, who have never organized a rally, don't understand how much it costs and that venues often ask for $$ well in advance. The organizers are often out-of-pocket until the registrations come in and then pray there is enough to cover everything.

Best of luck to those who are planning to throw their hat(s) in the ring to get the 2013 International Rally. Flagstaff was surely a lot of work for the organizers and a TON of FUN for the participants

I was approached by four different groups at the Flagstaff Rally, but no proposals have been received as of today.

California in 2013

Maybe its time for California to step in and SWEEP the whole thing for 2013. I can see it now . . . 200 trucks just cruising down Pacific Coast Highway. 200 trucks pulling into the Disneyland parking lot. 200 trucks filling the lower parking lot at the Reagan Library. 200 trucks roaring through the mountain villages of Big Bear and Silverlake. 200 trucks getting a ticket for cruising Hollywood Blvd. Probably stop traffic and make the news on all 13 channels. Everybody in So Cal would "want one of those". Demand would become incessant. Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche dealerships would go bankrupt. The price of our trucks would escalate beyond imagination. We'd all be millionaires . . . well maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit.

it could happen.

15th Oct has come and gone …. Now what?

Some of my thoughts in no particular order…..

Hoisting the 2013 International SSR Rally.
Is their some kind of Liability Insurance or secret key, etc that has to go from previous Rally committee to the next? If not, then I don’t understand why someone has to go though this approval process as outline in post #1. If somebody wants to do it, then let them do it.

Do we really need an “International” SSR Rally? In looking at the various 2012 SSR Rallies that have been announced, you’ll notice folks from all over are marking down their calendars and making plans to attend those events. Hopefully that trend will continue in the out years.

Like one of our SoCal Nuts always says “Plan it... & they will come”

IMO, I think Doug and the gang are trying to make sure that the folks wanting to have the 2013 rally understand what it means in the terms of $$ and time. Some venues require liability insurance but since we are not a formal club we are all on our own under most circumstances.

Also, IMO, the need for an International Rally was to have a central venue to bring all four corners of the US and Canada together. Most don't have the time or $$ to travel cross-country to most of the events, hence, the west and east rarely meet. If the event were to come any further west or go completely east would defeat the original purpose and just become a normal event.

Personally, while I would love it to be somewhere I haven't spent much time before, I would like to see it in the Memphis or Nashville areas. Maybe the Colorado group could delay their Rocky Mountain Mt. Rushmore run until 2013 and turn it into the International Rally instead..."hint, hint" Jeff

We did get insurance for the car show event. It was requested by the owner of the property. It should be somewhere besides the left or right coast. Otherwise it would be just another event and not as "special"

very well said, and as an X Rally Committee chair ( I was appointed ) we also approached the az group because we knew that this group was dependable, had resources and cared about providing ideas and events that would make everyone happy. Without the support team to back up the person in charge, you have one very tired and unhappy chairperson trying to do everything.
Most of the smaller venues, can not hold 200 trucks in their area, MV, the Keys etc. this has to be done in an area that is located with access to many large hotels, events, touristy things etc.

Plenty of time, don't rush it.

First of all, my California suggestion was merely a joke. I agree we can't have an International on either coast without really making it a long jaunt for someone (although Flagstaff was only 7 hours from the West Coast).

Has anybody kicked around the idea of a Power Tour type of event. Where the event goes on for weeks traveling all over the country. Where participants could jump in and run any segment, or segments, of the event depending on their nearness, time and $$$$ they have available (a special prize to those retired rich basturds that do the whole event).

Or maybe, for example, an Interstate 40 Event where trucks start at each end of the country and meet somewhere in the middle on Interstate 40 ? Or Interstate 80 ? or 70 ?

Or maybe our Canadian friends would honor us with a road trip from Vancouver to Ottawa, eh ? Did the reverse of that once in 1964 with a brand new Triumph Spitfire and girlfriend (tent, sleeping bags, and air mattresses on the luggage rack, Miami to LA via Canada in one summer. What a hoot).

Most of us come from the most inventive progressive generation ever, we should be able to come up with something really unique. Think ! ! !

Jeff does make an excellent point. Best examples are the Laughlin Run and maybe the Maggie Valley Run where the largest CONCENTRATION of trucks can easily get to them with reasonable amounts of travel.

Love the "secret key" comment, Jeff. Kinda has a Bilderberg Free Masons taste to it.

The secret key is making sure whoever decides to host the event follows through, and is committed to the task. This event has a three event, four year history, a tradition started by Lloyd and Gerry in '07. I believe it's a good tradition, and should continue.

As always, anybody can host any event anywhere they wish, the point is, nobody wants to do it.....yet.

It'll work out, one way or the other. I will say again, it doesn't matter where it's held, members will come.

You have inventive ideas Gary, not to be dismissed.

Anybody that could plan and execute a "rolling event" would need to be retired, or have the ability to spend a lot of time away from work, during the planning stages and the actual event. And have the personal resources (i.e.; cash) to do so, and build those costs into the event to be reimbursed.

Add to that, the potential for major cancellations by those that have "committed" to the event, for whatever reason.....the organizer of such an event would have a HUGE risk personally to recoup their costs of organizing such an event.

Not saying it can't be done, but whoever did it may end up holding a lot of costs that can't be recouped.
