Arizona to Springfield 2007

I know there are several AZ SSRs traveling to Springfield. I am planning to depart Phoenix, headed through Payson to join the California group in Winslow, early Friday evening, June 8th. This should be a gorgeous drive. Current departure is planned for 3:00pm from the 5 & Diner at Arizona Mills in Tempe. If any San Diego SSRs are interested in joining us, just let me know.

Here's a link to Keith's agenda and places to make reservations. California to Springfield 2007

I'll provide the briefing, maps and agenda to Winslow. If you would like, you can send me your cell phone numbers by PM and I'll distribute a list with the departure packet.

We're ready to go

Mike

Talking Az to Springfield

Mike

If I order an exhaust system, can you bring it to Springfield for a tech session install?

I have to consider that you are serious..... Here's a few specs that will let you answer the question for me.

The system is about 95 pounds of polished stainless that is packed in two boxes. The smallest is 48" x 36" x 12" and the larger is 60" x 18" x 12". No way to get both into the SSR, with the floor jacks, jack stands and tools needed. This is not taking into account that I have a few other things to put in the back.

I think I'm taking this too serious though.

Mike -
You are taking this too serious. It would be a fun way to kiil some time at the rally. I am serious about getting the exhaust system. I still have to save a few more pennies. See you in Springfield.

Re - Evaluation

I did some careful calculations about the trip from Phoenix to Winslow and would like to change the route a little.

To go through Payson will take about 4 hours to get to Winslow. Traveling through Flagstaff will be 3 hours.

We would have a lot less traffic through Payson, but I think I'd rather go through Flag and save the hour......

Comments???

FWIW . . . if you leave at 3:30pm as you previously indicated, you should arrive in Winslow about the same time the Cal group is arriving. Keith (kwhopper) and I have reserved rooms at an old-style motor inn called the Desert Sun Motel (reservation info on the Cal to Phoenix thread). Very inexpensive and most likely very rudimentary, but what to hey ! !

Thanks Gary

But we're gonna pass on the Sunset Motor Lodge..... I showed it to Debbie and I can't repeat the exact word here, but it was a nefinite NO.

She has stayed in a couple pretty "divey" places with me in the last 10 years and I now know better than to try to convive her that "rustic", "nostalgic" and "rudimentary" (especially when couple with "inexpensive") is anything close to meeting her standards.

I turned the Winslow reservations over to her.... She checked the La Posada and found it fully booked. (Too bad, cuz it looked pretty neat) We ended up booking at the Holiday Inn Express for $82. It's as far away from the railroad as you can get and it looks nice and clean. Shell station is right across the street.

Has anyone researched breakfast??????

Regards,

Mikey

I checked, and its a BIG YES! They have food in Winslow, and somewhere around town they even serve breakfast. The Mayor said, "When all else fails, McDonald's is always ready. No reservations needed"

You're going to begin to think I'm just a little bit flighty ! !

Out of concern for the security of my truck, I've now changed my reservation to the Holiday Inn Express that almost everyone else, including Vix, is staying at on Friday nite. I asked about the $82 rate, but was told that is a NON-CANCELLABLE RATE ! ! . . . so I'm reserved for $95 since there is a slim chance that I can't go after all.

If we leave Barstow(our gathering point) @ 11:00am the Cal caravan should reach Winslow around 6:40, allowing an hour for lunch and 2 pee breaks enroute. This is, of course, using GoggleEarth's mileage and time computations (SSRs for some reason don't always fit their traveling model). So this should put us arriving in Winslow about the same time as the Arizona contingent.

Weary, are you sure you can drive our truck this far? Don't you have to have some kind of Travel Visa' to get your truck out of California?

I would be careful driving near him, cuz you know he is going to be followed by that unmarked black helicopter.

Why Michael . . . are you suggesting that just because I flew to Woodward last year and flew to Maggie Valley this year, that I can't drive to Springfield?
(I have backup flight plans with United right now, just in case )

Hey, Mike & Debbie

We have reservations for Sat. nite at the Big Texan, and changed our Oasis reservations to arrive Sunday nite. Do you have any idea what time you and the California hooligans will leave Winslow? And from where? We'll leave PHX at 0-dark thirty, and meet up with you there. See ya!!

Breakfast in Winslow

I have not heard anything from the CA bunch on the breakfast location in Winslow..... I am suspecting that we will be arriving for breakfast about 7:00 or 7:30 and departing Winslow at 8:00 or 8:30.

My routing software says about 3 hours drive time from either your location or mine..... Might work pretty good.
