California to Springfield 2007

I thought I'd start a California to Springfield thread...

My tentative schedule is: (I'll adjust times to meet up with others!)

Leave Kingsburg @ 7am on Friday June 8th
Arrive in Winslow AZ @ 7pm-ish (626 miles)

http://www.standinonthecorner.com/
Poss Accomodations: (I haven't called any motels yet)
I like the sound of this one:
Desert Sun Motel
1000 E. Third St.
Winslow, AZ 86047
Motel, vintage 1950's Motor Inn with modern conveniences and friendly service oriented staff. Daily, weekly, kitchenettes available. Across form the Falcon Restaurant
E-mail: larryperna@cox.net

Leave Winslow AZ @ 7am -on Saturday June 9th
Arrive Amarillo TX @ 7pm ish? (552 miles)

Stay at the Big Texan Motel?
http://www.bigtexan.com/motel.htm
We could even stage a "LIVE" internet event attempting to eat THE 72oz Steak:
http://www.bigtexan.com/72ozlive.htm

"Groups receive extra-special attention at the Big Texan Motel. We'll personally greet the guests when the motorcoach arrives, and treat group members to a reception in the hotel lobby. Big Texan hospitality begins with the first call you make to our sales staff, and continues until our staff waves goodbye as you're leaving the parking lot.
To make your motel reservations, click the "Make Reservation" button below. If you need more information, call 1.800.657.7177."

Leave Amarillo TX @ 7am on Sunday June 10th
Arrive Springfield @ ???? (May route thru very N/W corner of Arkansas so I can add another state to my states I've been in list!) (545+ Miles)

I'm open for suggestions...

Good Plan

Sounds like a winner to me, Keith.

GE (GoogleEarth) has you blasting through Barstow in 3 1/2 hours with a half an hour for breaks, this puts you into Barstow @ 11:30am.

I can get to Barstow in 2 1/2 hours and meet up with a "gathering" of California trucks.

Looking at those that have evidenced an interest in the Springfield Super Rally I come up with 8 California trucks. However, I see their trip to Missouri coming out this way:

Lloger - leaving earlier to setup event
kwhopper89
WearyEagle - won't know until a week before if I can attend
BlueThunder
Artsmart - cancelled
Vix0454 - leaving earlier (Thursday)
DMW
autodan - leaving later, maybe catching up with us at Winslow

May even gather LadyinRed from Nevada at Needles or Kingman ?

I also like the breakdown of accomodations along the way. The Desert Sun Motel sounds great. Always wondered why the Eagles picked this city for "Take it Easy".
Just read a "not-so-nice" review about this motel. Seems they may be in the process of refurbishing it. Did a Sidestep.com search on motels in Winslow:

Days Inn . . . . . . . . . . . $80 **
Holiday Inn . . . . . . . . . $95 ***
Econolodge . . . . . . . . . $55 **
Super 8 . . . . . . . . . . . . $54 **
Winslow Days Inn . . . . $68 **

And Amarillo is a great choice, Keith. Read all I could about the Big Texan Motel. Although I won't be competing in the 72 oz. contest, I'd love to watch someone try ! !

I think this schedule also allows for any AZ members that want to have an easy first day (201 miles 3:03 hours) and meet up with us in Winslow, to join in.

May even get some Texans from the panhandle to join in Amarillo. Wouldn't that be the $hit$ and giggles ! ! Since you asked for suggestions, I would suggest posting this on the Southwest Forum so Arizonans could see this and also on the Texas Forum so Texans going through Amarillo could see this.

I am concerned that we should hear from the other members who qualify for this run, BlueThunder and DMW and get the ball rolling with reservations at these places if we're to travel together. Autodan may be able to arrange an earlier start time and we delay an hour or so at Barstow, so as to include him and Phyllis in the caravan. I prefer to travel with other SSRs.

You could pick up LadyinRed (Lizz) in Needles or Kingman...that would be a shorter run for her and John rather than backtracking to Barstow.

We could leave earlier . I have to attend graduation Friday morning, they want faculty to attend. We could leave early Friday afternoon, leaving Barstow about 1 or 2 pm that is about as early as we could make it

I am still trying to figure out when to leave. I definately want to caravan with someone. I see Lloyd is leaving Thursday morning and a couple Friday morning. Are these the only two groups from CA going?

I have made reservations at the Big Texan in Amarillo for Sat the 9th

I also just made reservations for the Desert Sun In Winslow for Friday the 8th...

They are in the process of renovation, and the completed rooms are suppose to be nice. $45 for the night... 928-415-0442 (I left a message, and John from the hotel called me right back!) I mentioned the SSRfanatic group and he said they would be more than happy to accomidate us....

Keith,
Sounds great ! ! Sure hope I can attend (sent registration forms to lloger today).

A couple of questions though:
1) What is the phone number of the Big Texan in Amarillo? and address if you have it.
2) What time will you be "blasting" through Barstow (I'm assuming you're going that way)?

I tried to PM DMW, but his mail box was full ? ? ? ? ? Don't know how to contact him.

Did you read Mike in AZ's plans for joining with us? He "now" plans to meet up with us in Winslow on Friday nite the 8th.

The web link to the Big Texan is in Keith's first post and right here:
http://www.bigtexan.com/motel.htm

This fits pretty well for me. Can't leave Phoenix till Early Saturday (06/09)Morning. I also already have a reservation at the Big Texan for that night. I intend to leave early enough to meet those already in Winslow....(but should I not make it in time for the departure from Winslow, don't wait for me... I will see you in Amarillo eventually)

Thanks, Z
I now have reservations for Saturday June 9th at the Big Texan in Amarillo ($65), awaiting a call back from the Desert Sun in Winslow for Friday June 8th (got answering machine ! ! )

P.S. - Now have also registered at the Desert Sun for June 8th. John seems like a real nice guy, says there is a terrific restaurant just across the street where the food is great and inexpensive. Can you believe $40 (all cash) ! ? ! ?

Yes - It'll be I-40 out there...

Leaving Kingsburg at 7ish - not sure how long it'll take to Barstow - so 10:30 OR SO IS MY GUESS...

I will be taking an alternate route in Oklahoma - rather than angle up toward Missouri, I'm planning on staying on I-40 until I get near Arkansas - I'll be turning North on Oaklahoma Hwy 59 to catch a sliver of Arkansas on the way to Springfield...

I posted this apparent discrepancy. Will see what comes of it.
I've nominated myself the Dumb Sh!t Award for today ...... My thread is corrected.... Please delete all references to the 7th. I was off....... And yes, I know it's gonna cost me some beer.
