Dark Friggin' Thirty in Amarillo, Texas
Got up at 5:00 to find a coffee shop open (thank you GPS) and get a cup of coffee. The Big Texas, where we stayed doesn't have coffee in the room.
Two long days . . . Keith & Kimberly, Vix, Matt were right on target at the meet point in Barstow. Hauled a$$ for Needles. Expected Dan & Phyllis to catch up with us at Winslow, but they caught us at our fuel top off point in Needles !
Winslow was a disappointment to me. Stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which was way off the beaten path (I can see why). Was not impressed with Winslow. Very old run down homes, beat up streets, just not what I expected. I have pics of the "Standin' on the corner" statue, but it was surrounded by fencing as the nearby building which appears to have burned was being repaired or torn down, hard to tell which. All went to the Sonic for burgers and malts. Back to the hotel, which had an indoor swimming pool. Topped off fuel and crashed at the Inn. The run through Flagstaff and beyond was beautiful (my opinion of Arizona as being all desert is certainly changed). High elevations (7335 at one point) meant we didn't need air. It was great. Met up with Mike, Broomer, Zainossr, blueeyes, and Fourhounds for breakfast. We all departed for Texas, with Paul (fourhounds) peeling off and returning to Phoenix.
Lot of fun on the Interstate to Amarillo, Texas. Truck on fire caused back up for miles, so just went through the center divider with out trucks (carefully), back the other way, to an off ramp and then jumped on Route 66 for several miles to go around the problem. Many would consider it very irresponsible, but there was a stretch, that was straight as an arrow, absolutely vacant for miles just west of the Texas border and I just had to do it . . . you only live once . . . I could only hurt myself . . . no one else . . . I opened the REDLINE ROCKETup and had to back down at 136, as I just became plain SKEERED ! ! The GPS recorded it to, listing my highest speed for the trip (day) at 136 MPH. It was fun, but won't do that again. As I was letting off, Dan blew by me doing the same. Spent almost the entire day at 85-90 mph (still had people passing us ! ! ). New Mexico is beautiful also. Great rock formations along the way. Very mild temps. Topped off fuel in Santa Rosa then, "Hee Haw, Hey, Y'all" as we crossed into Texas.
Met with the Texans, Kansasians, Coloradans ? when we went into the Big Texan to eat. We were late (now have lost 2 hours) and they had taken our table and there wasn't enough room for all of us, so we ate at a different table. Can't remember all their names but meeting many of them for breakfast in a half hour.
Sorry there are no pics. Haven't been able to download from the camera yet. Will do so when we get settled in Springfield.
We're off to Springfield after breakfast with more joining our caravan.I'm sorry about the pics . . . I know how that feels.
