Performance Tunes at the 2011 Flagstaff Rally Car Show
Joe Delano (2005SSR6Speed) will be on hand to provide Performance Tunes at the Car Show on a "first come, first served basis" at a rate of $ 200.00 per tune. This is more than Joe's usual rates, but he needs to cover his hotel, meal and trip costs. We need to give him a minimum of ten tunes to make it worth the trip.....
If you want one, please post it here.....thanks Joe for doing this!
Yes he can! I was waiting to see if you were doing a before or after the Rally tune.
During the rally tune! Jeremy hasn't been up this way & haven't made it to FL this year. Recent tech session there was a go til the schedule went Then Flagstaff was in the works & knew Joe may come. When that looked less probable thought it would just be convenient to drop the truck by MTI in Atlanta for shotgun exhaust (like Jim G's), 4.10 gears, a tune, etc.
No luck there, MTI has lets say "different" business practices these days, so others have been lined up to do exhaust/gears/misc installs (like Simple Engineering stuff, thanks Mike!). Then on to Route66Fanaticland where Permagrins abound & Joe can work his programming magic.
Work = Time suck lately, not the norm, no req, just ample excuse to delegate & motor points West. Look forward to meeting everyone!
I have had the great pleasure to work with Joe in the past and can tell you that this is money very well spent. The man knows his stuff and can provide performance and driveability changes you would not have thought possible without extensive and expensive modifications. This is well worth it for anyone who would like their SSR to perform at it's peak.
I've had Joe's tune in my 2006 for about 4 years and it is awesome. His touch can provide maximum performance, while maintaining just the right amount of "torque management" for protecting the driveline. I think it was worth 30-40 rwhp (seat of the pants measurement) on my LS2 automatic......
The most noticeable change will be for anyone that has a 6-speed. Joe can take out all of the torque management crap that is leftover from the automatic tranny software in your computers. This is a MUST HAVE for 6 speeds.....
The automatic tranny trucks wil feel 500 pounds lighter and the 6 speed trucks will feel like about 800 pounds lighter.

Doug, please add me to the bottom of the list as Joe & I didn't get a chance to look over my tune due to Joe being swamped with work during your AZ tech session.

If you're planning on paying for a tune, I'll place you on the list. If not, you should contact Joe directly prior to the Rally.
Touch ups are free so just hit me up and we can squeeze you in the schedule. Thanks!

No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.
I'm sure most coming to the rally already know how a street performance tune can help but couldn't hurt to re-post the basics for those new to the idea:
Getting a computer tune can help different aspects of performance & drivability. If you have Joe do it at the rally he will ask if you have made any modifications to the truck (like aftermarket exhaust, ported throttle body, etc), if are you looking for max horsepower/max gas mileage, etc. He will also ask if you want things like fan settings changed (since the main fan is set to come on higher than most would prefer from the factory).
As an example an SSR with the original GM tune will normally run at 240 to 260 degrees in most weather conditions except winter with the factory settings. With a street tune the main fan can be set to come on sooner, which normally prevents the engine from getting hotter than 210 to 220 in stop-n-go traffic, hot weather, etc. So if you have been leaving the A/C compressor running to force the fan to run on "high" this will no longer be necessary (to me this one change is worth what Joe charges if it is an issue). Things like idle speed can also be changed (I think the factory setting is a little low on a six speed, a tune can fix this). If you get a gear change before the rally and the speedometer is off this can also be corrected.
Our trucks (all years) were generally tuned conservative from the factory so a street tune from a pro like Joe can really wake them up without any significant disadvantages (like lower gas mileage). As Mike in AZ mentions, the automatic trucks feel 500 pounds lighter and the six speeds feel about 800 pounds lighter after being tuned. Tuning isn't major surgery and can easily be undone, though I don't know of a single Fanatic that has had an established tuner work his magic that was not happy with the changes. Here on the East Coast established tuners charge $300 to $400 for your basic street tune, so having someone like Joe do it at the rally for $200 is a real bargain.
If you have questions don't hesitate to post them here or give Joe (2005SSR6Speed is his nick on the forum) a call. And guys if anything in this description should be changed just let me know. I am not an expert, just wanted anyone new to the idea of tuning their truck to have enough info to decide.

If you wish to have Joe Delano do a performance tune to your truck while you're attending the 2011 Rally, please post in this thread ASAP!
Snooze you lose, this is a great opportunity to tune your truck to make it run cooler, get better fuel efficiency, and perform better than it ever has in the past!
