Hmmmm

I don't know John but for some reason Detroit and Woodward are taking the credit.

Detroit's history traces Woodward
August 17, 2007

1807: The avenue is designed by territorial Judge Augustus Elias Brevoort Woodward after Detroit's great fire of 1805. He calls the street, part of an old Indian trail, Woodward but insists it is named because it goes north, toward the woods.

1817: The road is constructed of logs.

1830: Woodward begins to fill with mostly frame houses and churches -- First Presbyterian, St. Paul's Episcopal and First Methodist among them -- leading to one stretch nicknamed Piety Hill.

1849: Woodward extends to Pontiac.

1894: Whitney Mansion is completed for industrialist and lumberman David Whitney.

1909: Woodward is paved between 6 and 7 Mile roads, making it the first stretch of concrete road in the nation.
1910: Henry Ford begins making cars at a massive new factory in Highland Park.

1911: J.L. Hudson's moves from the old Detroit Opera House.

Another quote from Woodward Ave. History.

At the onset of the automobile industry in the early 1900s, the roadway was asphalt paved over wooden blocks in downtown Detroit. Northern portions remained covered with gravel or planked. The majority of the road was dirt, which became rutted with mud during the spring. In 1909, responding to demand for smoother roads by bicyclists and early auto owners, the first mile of concrete highway in the world was laid by Wayne County between Six and Seven Mile Roads in Greenfield Township (present-day Northwest Detroit). Constructed in less than three months at a cost of $13,493, the new roadway construction technique attracted international attention, as its advocates claimed concrete more durable, cleaner and easier to maintain than former methods. In 1916, the entire 27-mile length of Woodward Avenue to Pontiac was paved and, in 1919, the first three-color traffic light appeared on the thoroughfare. In the 1920s, Michigan Legislature proposed widening Woodward to 200 feet from Detroit to Pontiac. Underway by 1926, the construction project provided an eight-lane boulevard from Six Mile Road to Pontiac.

Was that the facility across from the hotel? I could guess what they do ... but what would the tour consist of? Is there cool stuff to see?

hey you west coasters - if you're planning on a convoy, shift it along a northern route would ya'? maybe maybe we could meet-up on route. It's just a dream, a birthday wish if you please. We could leave on my b-day 08/08/08, that should bring us luck for the trip!!
And for those that can't manage two weeks off for the round trip, here's an idea. Drive east and attend the WDC, then fly home and get caught up on work, then fly back and drive home. I'm not kidding

Not next year but maybe the following year. I am not able to book the GM Heritage Tour two years in a row............sorry The WDC weekend is a popular one for car clubs. You have to be a local club to book it which I am the host of the MI SSR Club so that helps. I was already told that they will not allow two years in a row booking. I am planning on scheduling it early for the 2009 WDC.

Well to save your feet......I am moving the Banquet to Friday night instead Everyone seemed to really enjoy walking Woodward (including me)! Having the banquet on Saturday was to hard for all of us to get there......heck I left an hour before time, got stuck in traffic by 696 and arrived 10 minutes before the scheduled time Out of the whole weekend this was the only time I was majorly stressed out......wasn't sure I would have everything ready for the banquet on time
