The third C/CB tour will be on Columbus Day weekend - October 10th and 11th.
Plan of events are much like last year. Meet & greet on Friday, Chocolate/candy cruise on Saturday, and bridge cruise on Sunday. I am awaiting to hear confirmation on accommodations yet, but we're hoping to be in the same place as last year (Doneckers)
Please sign up if you're interested in attending.
As before, Monday the 12th is Columbus Day. Last year a few of us went down to Strasburg to ride the train and tour the museum. I'm looking at alternate activities for those that can/want to stay into Monday.
Accommodations. Unfortunately, the Doneckers guest house (B&B) is now closed and the properties up for sale. They still have their "1777 House" though and we have all of the rooms there reserved for the 10th and 11th. There are 5 standard rooms at $85/night + tax and 7 suites at 115/night + tax. Only 2 rooms on the bottom floor, so if you really need that, please call immediately. Continental breakfast is included. Doneckers - 1777 House. Rooms features and rates
Call Bill Donecker at 717-587-6350 to make a reservation. I was just informed by JONSUZ1771 that they will only take cash or check - no credit.
Alternatively, we have 5 rooms (possibly more if these fill up) at the Rodeway Inn a few miles away at $70/night + tax. This is a traditional motel so you park right in front of the door to your room. As Doug (Ratical) had mentioned in previous years, the Akron police HQ is just across the road, so it should be reasonably secure.
Rodeway Inn
116 South 7th St
Akron, PA 17501
877-274-6009 for reservations
717-859-1654
The held rooms are good through Sept 26th.
Itineraries
Friday October 9th 2009
Meet & Greet at the 1777 House followed by dinner at Pieros Italian Restaurant.
Saturday October 10th 2009
9AM - We will meet up at Stauffer's Cookie company outlet store in York PA.
375 Belmont St, York PA 17403
From there we will travel a short distance north to Das Sweeten Haus (Wolfgang Candies) and then to Lititz for Wilbur Chocolate and the Sturgis Pretzel House. We will have enough time to grab some lunch in Lititz while there. Afterwards, time permitting, we will head north to Lebanon for Wurtz Candies and then onto Hershey. Once done at Hershey, we'll high tail it back to Akron to Doug and Margo's place for dinner.
For those that want to participate, the Lititz Chocolate Walk will be happening on the same day again (3rd year running?). You must buy your ticket in advance. Here is the web site: Home
Sunday October 11th 2009
9AM - We will be meeting in the parking lot of the Ephrata Walmart.
A BBQ Lunch to be held at the end of the tour at Conestoga River Park. The park is along the Conestoga river where it joins into the Susquehanna. The tour will only last about 3 hours at most so folks that need to leave will still have plenty of daylight to hit the road after lunch. Menu will be like last year - burgers, dogs, tater salad, chips, and something for desert.
Monday October 12th 2009
I haven't made formal plans yet, but the museum and railroad in Strasburg were a big hit last year with the few of us that went. There is also the AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) museum in Hershey (which I have never been to that I can recall). There used to be a car museum in Strasburg - the Gast Motorcar Exhibit - but that place closed down a few years ago. It's now a furniture store. Non car related, there is the National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia or Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown (near Hershey).

Reason: Updated attendee list
I have a once in a lifetime chance to attend Edgar Allan Poes funeral on Sat. Oct.10th.
They are having a veiwing at his house and having a horse drawn hearst bring his body to the burial ground in Baltimore. This is a 200 year celebration and have waited along time to attend this.
If I can get the info for Sunday we can try to go to the covered bridge tour.
Poe could never have a proper funeral without "Lenore"

Just received my Poe newsletter today, they are expecting so many people to attend the funeral that the date has been changed to Sunday the 11th.
So count David, "Lenore", and me in for Saturdays Chocolate run. We will be at Poes funeral Sunday, so not for the covered Bridge.

I need to win the lottery so I can retire.
Then I'll have the time ( and the $$$) to go on all these wonderful runs!
Wishing I could be there,
To anyone that has not been on SSR71's Covered/Chocolate...... This is a great/fun run & tour. This is a beautiful part of PA.
Kevin (& company) are well organized and run a great weekend. Put this on your Things to Do list. Be there.
