Maggie Valley SSR-avan Through VA

VA/Eastern NC Fanatics Heading To MV

When I sent the above post out, I meant to include the Northeast group, at least those folks in the DE, NJ, and PA areas who will be driving down I-81 on Thursday.

I think two of us are leaving from Northern VA and heading out I-66 to I-81. I think a couple of "northern fanatics" are staying in Winchester Wednesday night, so will be about 20 minutes or so north of where we will merge onto I-81.

As we get closer to departure day, please let me know when you anticipate being in the Winchester area. I'm also hoping that a few Central VA fanatics join us on I-81, but they may end up traveling down I-95. Either way, I still think we'll have an awesome convoy of SSRs traveling down I-81 on May 1st.

Feel free to PM me with questions or for further discussion.

Thanks,
Julie

Meeting with Northern VA group

Julie,
I was planning on calling for a PA meeting point just south of the I-76 Turnpike and I-81 at the rest area past Carlisle PA at 8:30-9am for Philly, NJ and other PA folks to meet up... then head south.

If we left that rest stop by 9am, we would be in the Winchester, VA area around 10:30am... does this mesh with your timing????

What time would that get us to Maggie Valley?

If we leave Northern Virginia anytime between 7:00 and 10:00, we're going to be in rush hour traffic of some sort in any direction. Even leaving at 7:00, we'll be on I-81 about 20 minutes south of Winchester between 9:00 and 9:30, so will most likely miss you at that point.

Farther down I-81, Exit 205, there's an excellent winery that we could stop at and wait for you to catch up. Think that would work?

I'll make the suggestion on the Southeast forum post, and see what kind of response I get.

Julie

The plan is coming together!!!!!

RaticalSSR mentioned earlier that if you hit Harrisburg at 7am, then you're in Maggie Valley in the afternoon... I would assume by 5pm. My goal is to be there as close to 5pm as possible.

With that said, and what Julie mentions about being in Winchester about 9am, maybe the better time to hit the rest stop just south of Carlisle on 81 is by 7am... 7:15 leave time as a group???? This would allow us to catch the VA group in VA easier and give us more time to get to Maggie Valley in time???

How does that sound to the group coming from the north????

I am planning on staying in Winchester, VA Wednesday night. I don't know if Rich is also staying there. I was hoping to see him on Sunday but it looks like rain again.

That is a great place to meet. Right on 81 and any one coming from up north will be going by this rest area. Time sounds good. Even if we left by 7:30am that would be on schedule. As long as there is no tie ups we should be in Maggie Valley by 4:00

Looks like Rich (Barakouda) is heading to NC on Sunday to visit his sister.
I still plan on staying in Winchester, VA.

Wink Leaving for MV on Tuesday!

It still looks like Carl (woofman) and I (Chick) will be spending Tuesday night in the Wilkes-Barre area and then we plan on staying in the Roanoke area on Wednesday night.

Our drive time will typically be from 9am to 4pm, doing around a refreshing 333+/- miles a day.

Anybody is welcome to join us so if you see us on the road just drop in line.

We would have to leave by 3:30-4:00 in order to make the first meeting point. I'm not sure we'll make it, so don't wait for us. We'll keep our radios on channel 5, and try to catch up at some point on 81.

See yoos all next week!

We have just the little walkie talkies... about a 2 mile range on ours.

Again... for people reading this thread, check out the first post here for details on meeting points!

I use a set of Midlands with an 18 mile range. They're not too costly, and they do the trick. You can search online for hand held 2-way radios, and you'll find lots of brands, with different ranges.

Obviously, people will have different opinions about different brands...but if you get something with a long range, and a middle of the road price, you should be pretty safe.

With time being a factor, you should be able to get one (or a set), at any Target, Walmart, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.

Most of the radios are '22 channel GMRS/FRS'. If you see that, you're good to go.

Here's an example: : Midland GXT-710VP3 Two-Way GMRS/FRS Radios with 26-Mile Range, Pair : Phones

And here's one which includes headsets (very handy when the top is down): : GMRS/FRS 2-Way Camo Radio Pack with 26-Mile Range : Camping

BTW... we all need to pray to the Sun god and the Goddess of Top Down Driving for next week! Looking at the weather, looks like a cold front with rain on Friday and Saturday for MV!

Of course... how many times has long range forecasts been wrong? So cross your fingers, toes, and "checkfreaks" for better weather!!!!!

I realize that you picked channel 5 for the radios a while back....but would you be interested in changing to channel 7 sub 0, which is what we will be set to in MV?

ps I probably can't get up early enough to catch up with you guys...
