My SSR: 2004 Ultraviolet - bought new in 2004 as an impulse and I still love it. No modifications to it yet
Whitehouse TX to Washingtonville NY mid November
Instead of taking the 3500, we're going to take the SSR from Tyler, Texas to Washingtonville NY about Nov 8 for a family get-together. Planning on taking a relaxing trip - so if anyone has any SSR get togethers in that time frame - along the route - let me know in advance and we'll try to stop by. Never did one yet - but would like to. you can also email me at donself@donself.com

about 1700 miles each way. I bought the 04 SSR in 04 and we are approaching 40,000 miles - so even though she drives it every day to the store or quilt meetings, it hs low mileage as I've never taken it on a long trip yet.
The northeast in November... the flora will be kaput, not much green, lot's of brown. That makes for longer vistas in the mountains though. Likely to be chilly, but the middle of the day can be quite pleasant. Of course the wussies will have mothballed their SSRs for the winter.
Keep us posted as you figure out your route, and have fun.

Somethings to think about when planning a long trip: (especially in the R). Bring a spare tire, ignition switch, make sure the battery is in good condition. It would pay to have AAA if you don't have towing and rental on your insurance policy.
As for the weather, I can almost guarantee you WILL hit SNOW somewhere along the Northern Route in the middle of November. Better wax the chassis real good before you leave Texas. HAVE A SAFE TRIP

I was rotating the tires on the SSR today in the garage (ok - left to right and vice versa) - and thought bout the suggestion to take a spare on the trip. Uh - what size? Murphy is going to know if I took a 19 and then it will be a back tire that goes or the other way around. I am going to replace one set of tires before we leave as the other set looks almost new.

I'd get a 17''Trailblazer spare. To be lucky enough to have the right size with you is 50/50. So with the 17'' P245/65/17 spare, this fits good on both ends, and will fit in the bed. You could really go nuts and get Simple Engineering's spare kit before the trip. These are just suggestions. I have travelled to Mich. and N.C. several times with no spare, just played the odds, and got lucky. It's up to you. I do REALLY suggest bringing an ignition switch if you have one. This is small and cheap insurance.
Again, have a safe trip.

I have been carrying an OEM Front Wheel and Tire (double wrapped in spare tire covers) in the bed as a spare for years.
I would never use it on the rear for a long trip but it, along with my AAA Card, would definitely serve in an emergency to get me to the next town and/or restaurant bar to drown my sorrows.
Yes sir, Rte66SSR, good advice. The new cruisers come out in September, but with most towns having budget shortages that will have to wait. By November the cops are getting mighty testy.
On the radar detector... when you're cruising the byways with little traffic, gawking at the scenery, it's easy to miss that rusty little 25mph sign covered with dead vines.
But I disagree on the snow. You could very well miss driving in snow, however the cold will cause them to salt some roads at night, so you should wash that off if you can.
Even if you have 4 new tires, you'll wish you had a spare when you run over that piece of angle iron in the road... or broken glass... or bottomless pothole...

The Simple-Engineering Spare tire kit is a two -three hour install and great piece of mind. It will handle the 17" wheel P245/65/17 tire combination. The spare is themn below the bed and does not take space from your luggage. The kit also contains the needed sockets, breaker bar, rachet and jack you will need to change the tire. All tools are in a nice bag with room for a big, inexpensive bath sheet to use as a ground cloth. You will then never need to worry again.

Check the manufacturer dates on your tires.
(Do a search on this site about this).
If they were made in '03 or '04 you need to replace them regardless of mileage or visual condition.
My '04 has less than 15,000 miles on it and the front tires were replaced after 1800 miles/2years, but all 4 of them will be replaced before I take it out of storage next spring.
Running on old tires, especially in hot weather and or long trips is a risky practice that could possibly cause an accident or injury. Even replacing a wheel can be expensive and could cost you a lot of downtime.
