Join Us in the North Georgia Mountains in Oct
UPDATES ARE IN BLUE, AS OF SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11
We are planning a cruise-in for October 17 in Blairsville, GA. I have a room reserved at Antonietta’s Grill for dinner. This is a dry county (no beer, wine or liquor sales), but the owner says we can bring in beer, wine or liquor and they will provide set ups. We will provide a large cooler with ice for the beer and wine.
This is a big weekend in Blairsville. The annual Good Neighbors Car and Truck Show starts at 9 am on Saturday morning in the United Community Bank parking lot on the Highway 515 bypass in Blairsville. It is usually the largest show in North Georgia with over 200 vehicles registered -some classics as well as newer corvettes, etc. I’ve never entered my SSR, but we’ve attended several shows.
The Sorghum Festival will be going on at Meeks Park in Blairsville both Saturday and Sunday. There is free admission and free parking. (www.sorghum.blairsville.com)
I’ve talked with the Best Western Milton Inn and they currently have rooms available. Since it is October and their busiest time of year, they won’t give us a deal or reserve a block of rooms. They will try to put us together if you reserve a room in the next couple of weeks. You need to call the local Blairsville phone number (706-745-6995) and request a room in the building with balconies. Mention that you are with the SSR Fanatics and want to be with the group. The rooms with King size beds are on the street side of the building and the rooms on the parking lot side have 2 double beds. The rooms on the parking lot side have a little bit of a mountain view. All rooms have a refrigerator and microwave. They serve a continental breakfast in the mornings. The rooms are $99.95 per night. (Do not call the 800 Best Western central booking number or you probably won’t be with the group.) I spoke with Best Western today (Sunday, Oct 11) and they still have some rooms available
Updating the plan since several people are coming just for the day, meet at Rib Country, east of town on Hwy 515, at 12:30pm for lunch. Then leave from there for the cruise to Brasstown Bald. We will pull through the hotel parking lot to check for anyone who didn't go to lunch. I think there is a $4 parking fee at Brasstown Bald, but the views are spectacular. Still plan to meet back at Antonettias for meet and greet at 5 pm Return to the restaurant (across a parking lot from the motel) about 5 pm. Have a meet and greet with appetizers and cocktails from 5 until we decide to order dinner. (REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO BRING YOUR OWN BEER, WINE OR LIQUOR!)
For those of you coming from the Atlanta area there is a beautiful drive up Highway 19 from Dahlonega or Highway 129 from Cleveland . The highways join at Turners’ Corner and come across Neels Gap where the Appalachian Trail crosses the highway. The Walasi Yi Center is on the right in a rock building built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930’s. It houses a wonderful store for hiking equipment, local books, pottery, jewelry, etc. The view from the terrace is one of the best in North Georgia without having to go for a hike! Of course you can come up I-575 which becomes Hwy 515 without all the curves and some beautiful scenery.
If some of you arrive on Friday night, we will have a cookout at our cabin. Plan to gather any time after 5 pm and we will cook hamburgers and hotdogs around 7 pmWe will furnish beer and wine for Friday night. Parking is very limited so I will need a count of cars. I may have to barter with my neighbors to use their driveways. There is no street parking. If you plan to come Friday night, pm me and I will send you directions to our cabin
So come for the weekend or just come for dinner on Saturday night or anything in between. The mountains should be beautiful!
But remember if you want to stay overnight, you MUST make reservations SOON!

There are a couple of routes, but I would recommend taking I-40 west from Ashville to Clyde. Take Hwy 23/74 south through Waynesville, etc. Stay on Hwy 74 to Murphy, NC (this will take you through the Nantahala Gorge-a beautiful drive). Hwy 74 will merge with Hwy 19 and Hwy 129 along the way. Stay on Hwy 19/129/74 through Murphy. About 5 miles out of Murphy, Hwy 19/129 will turn left to Blairsville. When you arrive in Blairsville, turn left on Hwy 515 and the motel will be about 2 blocks north on the right. The restaurant is next door behind the Zaxby's.
Look forward to seeing you!

I am not sure if I can make this one; maybe as a day trip.
I don't think Hwy 19 from Dahlonega compares to the Dragon's Tail, but if it intimidates you, come up Hwy 129 from Cleveland, it is a much easier drive. Not too convenient from your direction, but I-575 and Hwy 515 offer virtually no curves and 4-lane all the way.

This sounds like fun so I will make our reservations. We will plan to arrive on Friday afternoon.
See you on the August 15th.

We will be there, as it looks now. Friday, or Saturday, is yet unknown, but count on us. I will make a reservation for Friday, just in case.
Will keep in touch with you Joan.
Do you want me to blast out a GA Fanatic email?

Booked a room in the King section.
Marilyn there says she only has one other reservation. It is Carol and Mike Eidson. (Ellen and Arthur bunkin up?)
She also says it is listed under a "Police reunion"! Anyway, booked Friday and Saturday. Their cancallation policy is 24 hours, in case one would need to cancel. Will know as it gets closer if we are coming just Saturday / Sunday, or Friday Night, which would be my preference.

No bunkin-up. I just called and Marilyn couldn't find our reservation that Brenda made so I now have one from Marilyn. We will be coming on Friday unless something happens between now and then. I told her we tried to avoid the police whenever possible.

Reservations
I just spoke with the manager at the Best Western and told him if there was one more problem with reservations, we would be moving to another motel. (Probably an empty threat since there is only one more motel in town and this is their busiest season).
If anyone else has any confusion over reservations, please PM me and I will "confer" with him again. I think I got his attention.
I did confirm that Grandma and Budhorse have reservations.
Joan

Georgia Mountain Fall Festival
Someone at Grandma' Barbeque asked what the Georgia Mountain Fall Festival in Hiawassee schedule was. It is October 9-17, so Saturday, the
17th will be the last day. It is only about 22 miles to Hiawassee from Blairsville so it would not be a problem to attend if anyone is interested.

Who is coming? Can we get a list started on your first post, Joan? Only you can edit it.
See ya in the Panhandle next weekend? If so, when are you passing thru here? Maybe we caravan together?
Sorry, we've been at Myrtle Beach. The wifi wouldn't work in the room and I was too lazy to find a place where it would. I will update the first post with what I know.
