Memphis Visit (First time for me)...

Unlike some of my work travels, I may actually have some time to explore while in Memphis.

I just booked a room at the Embassy Suites on Shady Grove Road for July 9th thru 19th...

How about that =- a weekend stay! (My other trips have been M-F...)

What is the "Slugburger Festival"??? What is a SLUGburger?

Any tips on my stay? Have to do's or see??? BBQ suggestions (Interstate - Rendezvous are already on my list!). Events???

I do know to go into Mississippi to purchase my smokes as they are the second least taxed state (following Missouri)...

I visited the concrete replica of the Mississippi river....it's on the island in the middle of the river. It's a way to kill an hour (not necessarily a good way )

Hey...maybe I could get my work to send me out there at the same time
I have a plane ticket I have to burn before 6 months from now.

There was this Crepe place across from the mall that I enjoyed a crepe or 2 from.

As for slugburgers....they don't sound appetizing to me:
Slugburger, History of Slugburger Sandwich, Corinth, Mississippi

The BBQ dry rub at Rendezvous is the best i have ever had, Graceland is a waste of money too expensive and not what you would expect. Beals Street is always good.

I'll do the River Relplica before I check out Graceland! (These are the types of things I like to check out!)

BUT, I'm sure most of my students will want to check out Graceland - so, I'll most likely check that out too...

I'm teaching a class - so perhaps your employeer will let you come help me!

I'll second the Rendezvous...although it was hard for us to find and it was less than a block from our hotel I brought sauce home, but you have to remember to put it in your CHECKED in baggage and not carry on

What are you teaching?

Oh...I guess you have to go see the ducks at the Peabody. It's one of those tourist things.

We could have some fun with a shop owner in the Peabody. I was doing some work for him and then he just bailed of his end.....I'd play a joke on him just for fun

Ducks at the Peabody and Graceland are two of my experiences. Enjoyed both.

If you like music, Beale Street is good from what I hear. I didnt get to go there when I was in Memphis because we had young kids with us and not the atmosphere we wanted to expose them to.

Are a little different on Beale Street starts about 9 and goes till morning lots of live bands. You can also get a deep fried peanut butter and bannana sandwitch like Elves used to eat. I skipped it.

That sounds like something I should learn......A college professor once told me "If I catch you using that knowledge, I will fail you for the quarter"....I had found a way to log in to my account from other college campuses even if the prof locked it.

So I think I could pick it right up

The Peabody and the Holiday Inn Select are across the street from each other. I can't remember the hotel next to the Holiday but if you go down the "alley" between the two you'll find the Rendevous. There's some interesting history there. If you get a chance try to see the Gibson guitar factory...it's worth the effort (if you like that kind of thing).

The RUM BOOGIE bar is not a bad place to eat and has a great house band.

I can't remember the name of the "bar & grill" near the Peabody but patrons "shoot" tooth picks into the ceiling throughout the year and once a year they take them all down, count them, and then the bar donates a certain amount of money (per toothpick) to a local charity. Good lunches there.

These are just some ideas for you to consider....there is about any kind of entertainment you can think of in Memphis.

Hope you enjoy yourself.

Memphis

Loved Graceland - bought the ticket at AAA before I went and did the whole lot - well worth the time and money - great insight into the man - the house is not much by today's standards but interesting. Spent about 5 hours there.

Jim Nealy's Interstate BBQ - incredible food - wet ribs
jimneelysinterstatebarbecue.com - Site Information from Alexa
I wasn't a rib lover until I went there - it is a real hole in the wall but that is part of its ambience. ordered the large rib platter (5 ribs - left one on the plate - but so delicious. Didn't go to the Rendezvous - dry ribs and only had time (and room) for one meal - next time.

Don't forget about Corky's BBQ! Get the pulled pork with the slaw on top! It's way down on Poplar though. And if you've got an evening left to kill, head south to Tunica, MS - about 45 mins due south of Memphis. Several casinos down there.

Mud island?

Did Corkys last week - very very good...

Toms BBQ on Getwell is a winner as well.

Tried Interstate, Neeleys, Rendezvous, and Pauls (in little rust colored building in Marks Mississippi)... Made a drive thru Northern Mississippi over the weekend - saw Ground Zero in Clarksdale and visited Oxford. Spotted two SSR's during the drive!

Had dinner at The Tower Room last night - 33 floors up on Poplar Ave - Great view and dry rubbed pork chops...
