MV ignition switches

Just wanted to let everyone going to MV know that I will be bringing a couple of ignition switched with me in case there is a need for them. If some needs one let me know and I'll even install it for you for free, even if you have your own and need it installed let me know.

Wingrider, that's a great idea.

I guess that one little item has caused more driveability problems than any other part. I have been planning on having a spare in each SSR.

Before it's to late, guess I better get a couple.

Thanks again, great idea.

Ignition switch????

Shut off the R last nite and closed the door. The radio stayed on. Restarted the R and tried it again and everything worked as advertised (radio shut off). Ignition switch?????????????? I will be going to MV. I may need to buy an ignition switch if you folks think that is the problem. Do you have to rekey after installing a new switch??

No rekeying necessary. Do a search for ignition...you'll see a lot of posts and there's several different symptoms for a bad switch.

Great idea Wingrider! Are you bringing any to sell? Been planning on ordering a couple to keep in each R and hadn't got around to it yet. I'd be interested in buying in MV if you have extra.

Wingrider: You are a benevolent person of the highest order. Thank you for that generous offer and all the tips you have posted over these five years of ownership. Do you know where the ignition switches were made and why they cause so much trouble? If GM technicians were all like you the world would be a much better place. Looking forward to seeing you and your wife again!

It's possible but I would lean more toward the door latch as that is an input to the BCM for the retained accessories control.

I was just going to bring a couple in case someone had a failure, but if there is a need I can bring more. I don't know the exact price but I think they are around $30.00.

What everyone is talking about is the electrical igniction switch, where the key goes is the lock cylinder. Two seperate parts that work together to turn the system off and on.

Ignition Switch

WINGRIDER; Is it necessary to remove steering wheel inorder to
replace ign.switch module?Sounds like you have changed many.
I noticed you mentioned it takes only about 20 min. to replace.
What components do you remove to gain access to switch?

thanks pjs-ssr

No you don't have to remove the steering wheel, and yes it only takes me about 20 min to change one.
Just pull down on the lower half of the column cover to remove it and the switch is just below the lock cylinder. disconnect the connection and push the two white tabs in and the switch will drop down. the hardest part is getting the two gears timed right if you have never done one.

Bill ... hope to be close enough to watch you change one out. I carry a spare and to see the steps of the R&R is much better than reading the steps for me.

Sounds like a tech session to me!

I've been thinking of buying a spare switch for our SSR.. seems as though it's a matter of time. But I would love to see how they are put in. This way I know what to do. I hope I can catch this while at Maggie Valley!

Wingrider... thanks for thinking of others at this event! This is why we love this group!

I would be willing to show how it's done. I will be installing a couple of them but I don't know when or were I'll be doing it.

OK Ed, I'll do yours and if any one wants to watch I'll take the time to explain how to change the switch. we should pick a time that is convenient for most people.
