I am looking for some advise, opinions, suggestions from this group in the South East. Within the next 1-2 years I am planning on moving out of the tax state of New Jersey and heading to a more pension friendly state. I am looking for a location that doesn't get the snow like NJ gets and if it does get snow it is a short winter season. Florida is my last choice to move to since that is where I vacation most of the time.
So you guys and ladies from Tennessee, Kentucky, etc. lets here your recommendations.
harleyrules, you should move to Las Vegas NV. We get snow when we want snow, just drive up to the mountains. No state income tax, housing is already at the bottom and we have some really nice retirement communities. What more would you want?????
I have thought about moving there. If my parents would have gone there like they originally planned I would be on my way. But they decided to move to Pa. to be closer sister and the rest of the family is near by. So, I am looking for a location where I can be back to Pa/NJ in a days drive if needed..... For now anyway....
Tennessee and Florida are the only two states in the Southeast that do not have a state income tax. I live in Northeast Georgia and love it here (although we do have a 6% state income tax). I lived in upstate New York one year (one winter) and that was all the snow I needed to see for a life time.

March 1 starts first day of retirement.
I grew up in Ky. and lived there for 22 years before accepting a job in CT. I love Ky. but it is not much warmer there in winter versus N.J. although Ky does have considerable less snowfall. Like N.J. and CT., Ky. does have an income tax as well as sales tax. Property taxes, however, are low compared to N.J. and CT. I spend winters in Fla. and am seriously considering changing my residency to FL. which has no income tax or personal property tax. That is a big incentive given my pension and Soc. Sec. income would not be subject to state income tax. I believe I need only spend 6 mos. and 1 day to become a resident of FL. GA. and S.C. are nice but both have an income tax although a portion can be excluded based upon total income.

Northwestern North Carolina, we moved here in Kernersville between Winston-Salem and Greensboro 7 yrs. ago from Michigan. We can be in the mountains in 2 hrs. and the beach in 3 1/2 hrs. best of both worlds. We still have the 4 seasons but much different than Michigan. Come on down, the people are great.

FL is the high property tax, windstorm insurance, flood insurance and home owners insurance. The property tax is 10X the amount in areas that dont have income tax. There are no free rides. There are tax tables that take into account all the variable taxes, sales, property, income etc..that will give you the true cost of the States Taxes.

What he said. We have the best of both worlds. When we have snow - it's OK, cuz it'll be gone tomorrow. And once you experience the Outer Banks, it'll change your idea of the "the beach" forever.
I've lived all over the Country, including 20 plus years in Arizona, but the place is tops.

Harleyrules - We lived in Maryland and Virginia for almost 60 years - before moving to the Albuquerque area in 2006. We have three seasons here - Spring - Fall and Wind - and, if you want to see snow - just look up at the mountains. Being from the East coast I can tell you that four things you would't miss from NJ if you moved out this way would be SNOW, HUMIDITY, BUGS and TRAFFIC. And, there are flights from Albuquerque, Tucson and Las Vegas that could get you back to PA within a few hours - without a passport (for now, anyway).

One or two years from now is a long time to plan for the Right Place. Things are changing rapidly across the nation. As of now, Western North Carolina is a very good place to consider. New Jersey will still be screwed up and expensive to live 10 years from now. Get out as soon as possible.
One thought that gets over looked when considering a place to move is the motor vehicle fees. Some states charge a % of the value of the vehicle for registration. This COULD BE AS HIGH AS $1000 to register annually.
Good luck with your search. A native New Jersey SSR owner. Jim ssrtruck
TN has no state tax.
Sales tax is 9.75%. Been there for a few years now.
TN is considered in the "Bible belt". Still waiting to see who wants to commit political suicide for raising it over a "tinth".
License plate renewals here are a whopping $24. Next county over is over $90!
Last winter stunk, but mostly mild winters with 1 or 2 light snows.
Summers are usually upper 90's & some 100's. Humidity is usually 40% or more (miserable).

Been looking to get out of Jersey in a couple of years too. Found a nice little town in North Carolina called oak island. Its like the jersey shore was 60 years ago.Not crowded in the summer an hour from myrtle beach and not impacted by the hurricanes like the outerbanks. You can get a house two rows from the ocean or by the intercostal for $350,000.taxes are about $1,500 a year. You can fish all year and swim into november.
I recomend the southern Tn northern Al area of the south. THis is where i live as a small boy till my dad moved our family north to Peoria ILL. Real esate taxes are low no income tax, very mild cilmate ,but still have all four seasons, golf courses huge TVA lakes for fishing or water sports. When i finally retire for the 2nd time thats where i will go

Wow, I didn't realize the sales tax had gotten that high.

They are all wrong. Come to TEXAS. No state tax, and if for any reason you need to call Heaven, its a local call. Plus you will love the weather. It went from 75 one day to a wind chill of -31 two days later. We can have all four seasons in one week. Fun Fun Fun

I moved from North East GA to Western NC about 13 years ago. I love it here. I dont like the winters though, its cold. But not all of WNC is at the elevation I am at so they dont get the snow. The summers are not real hot and the the Fall season is gorgeous.
I love FL in the spring and winter but absolutely HATE the heat there the other 6 months.

Moved here in 1992. We have three great seasons and summer isn't one of them (mid July thru August - humidity can be a bit oppressive). good thing about being here are the following:
1) No state sales tax
2) Within 8 hours you can be in Charlotte NC, Florida, Chicago etc - very central.
3) Nashville is small enough to have a small city feel yet large enough to have good airports and amenities.
4) Franklin TN (20 miles south of Nashville - top retirement area) great downtown area and very homey
5) real estate is reasonable here. Property taxes are also reasonable
6) good SSR crew here.
7) lots of car shows in the summer - one or two each weekend somewhere in the city or environs
8) good back country roads for nice laid back cruises
9) Dolly Parton lives here
10) You can choose your lifestyle here - you can choose to be super busy or more laid back.
come by and check it out - we could all get together and take you to some local feed barns
Just my 2 cents - Kiwi (a transplant from the deep, deep south)
I moved to Nashville Tn back in 1986 from Detroit Mich. I found Its very easy to get things done here and the economy is very diverse , My business is up when the whole country seems to be down. Just like Kiwi says the car stuff cruises, shows, are first class! we have a good size SSR club here and we are anyways doing something. Weather is great with four good season changes. Come down and see us!
Yes Kiwi Dolly does live here, She lives on Crockett road you can always tell which house is hers because, Its the one with two big knockers on the front door!
Yes what they both said North Carolina is the place
