Michigan to flagstaff convoy!
Update.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know the rally in Flagstaff is many months away but as we ALL get older time seems to pass much faster so I thought that I would toss this out now to give everyone time to think about during the cold, winter months.
Travelling in a group can sometimes be slower and the chances of mechanical problems, etc. increase, but we've found it to be real "hoot" at times and you'll always have some memories to share with other folks.
For many members driving to Flagstaff will be a long, expensive trip.
Gas prices may well be $4 per gallon, and at an estimated 19 MPG, a 5,000 mile trip will be over $1,000 in fuel. So, we believe that we should get as much out of the trip as we can.
Our plan is to add some time to the "front" of the trip and do some touring/sight-seeing on the way to Flagstaff.
We'll be leaving the southern part of Michigan (near Ann Arbor) very early on the morning of Tuesday, August 30th, and drive to Omaha, Nebraska.
This is approximately 700 miles or about 12 hours.
The following day, we will leave Omaha and drive to Idaho Springs, Colorado, which is approximately 550 miles or about 8.5 hours.
Both days are expressway (I-80, I-70) driving.
This may be more driving than some people would like or want to do in two days, so the option would be that we make Idaho Springs, Colorado the main rendezvous point on the evening of Wednesday, August 31st, and everyone can plan their own time/drive schedules.
Our route will take us to the top of Mt Evans (the highest paved road in the U.S.), Arches National Park (natural rock formations), the Utah Canyonlands, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, ending up in Flagstaff in time for the registration on Monday afternoon.
We will arrive in Moab, UT on Thursday evening, September 1st.
This would be a great rendezvous point if anyone would like to join us there.
Depending on our arrival time, we will either tour the Arches National Park that evening or the following morning.
We've made this trip a few times and the scenery is awesome, especially for the people who have never been in, or west of the Rockies.
Also, members who are located east or south of Michigan are welcome to travel the entire distance with us and those who are to our west are welcome to join us in Omaha, NE, Idaho Springs, CO, Moab, UT or anywhere along the way at the convenience.
Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Either way, we'll see ya'll at the rally.

Glen, thanks for the update. Karen and I have been going over the very long Rally agenda and trying to decide on a plan (trips, etc) once we get there!

Scott;
The only event that we're signed up for is the railroad ride up to the G/C south rim.
We're gonna drive over to Sedona for a day ride as I'm sure some others will but that will be about it for us.
Hey Scott, Marty and I are doing the Scenic Rim Tour on Tues., the 6th and the Grand Canyon Railway on Wed., the 7th. Think about going with us. I am really looking forward to this trip. Especially the one getting to the rally.
We're now under less than THREE months away from our departure from Michigan to the SSR National Rally in Flagstaff, AZ.
If you're planning on going with us you need to make your reservations A.S.A.P.! Some of the motels are already booked and you may need to seek other motels so we need to book our rooms NOW!
If you are planning to travel along with us and need a list of the motels PM me and include your e-mail address and I'll e-mail it back to you.
Once you have booked your rooms please send me either a PM or an e-mail to confirm that you will be going with us just to make sure that we don't leave anyone behind.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask or PM me.

Since there is more time than I had counted on between the WDC and the Flagstaff get together, I think I will do some running around in between. I might join you along the way but not from the beginning.

Any SSR Fanatics that live along our AZ. route are more than welcome to join us for dinner on our nightly stops! Got to eat you know, right Glen?

Yep!
As soon as we get get our schedule finalized I'll post it and we'll let everyone know where we'll be each evening and see if anyone wants to meet up with us for dinner.
You know we NEVER go hungry!
I think we eat more. HarleyGuy knows where to find the best of everything. We stop between meals for snacks. We can also be sure of lots of fun with Glen and Elizabeth.

Michigan to Flagstaff
I got clearance from my orthopedic surgeon to drive & travel (I had my right knee replaced May 03). I made reservations for Idaho Springs, Moab, Escalante, Kanab, Kayenta, Little America - Flagstaff, Albuquerque and Edmond. I have been doing all my knee exercises plus walking on broken glass, hot coals and boards with nails to toughen up the bottoms of my feet. I am not being allowed to wear shoes on the trip.
If you come through Moab and Monument Valley, take some extra time to take pictures in these areas, they are beautiful!
If you come in on I-40, make sure to stop in Seligman, about 75 miles east of Flagstaff on Old Route 66. Have lunch or a Coke at the Snow Cap Drive In. It is a piece of Americana that needs to be experienced!

Yep, we'll be doin' all of the "touristy" stuff
Doug, turn your map over/around or something.
Seligman is WEST of Flagstaff but IF we have enough we may somehow squeeze it in.

Make sure you contact your hotel in Council Bluffs / Omaha as several areas in the Council Bluffs area near the Missouri River have had flooding and will likely see higher water for quite some time.

Yep, and thank you for the reminder.
I'm going to hold off on doing this until mid-August just in case something else happens!
I'm also watching the forest fire situation in AZ and NM but I think by the time we get there it should also be a non-issue.
Back in '92 or '93 when I traveled west they had just had a lot of flooding and I think every rest area through Iowa was closed.
Glen, I think Karen and I are ready for the AZ. Rally. We are broke now anyway!
Welcome to the club!
New tires for the SSR, new tires for the Vibe, a new rear tire on both of our Harleys, and this month the insurance for ALL bikes, cars and trucks, and license plates for all of E's vehicles!
I'm at least hoping for a good bottle deposit return month in August
