The 52nd Annual Bridge Walk is to beld on September 7th (Monday).
This is the ONLY time that you can actually walk across the Big Mac.
I just thought I'd see if any of ya'll might be interested in driving up to the UP on Sunday afternoon, spending the night, and walking across the bridge at 7:00AM on Labor Day Monday.
If we can get enough folks to go, I'll volunteer my wife Elizabeth to do the walk with ya'll.
And yes, I have done it twice before, and it's about a two hour+ walk.
Pat & I have done it three times (including the 50th anniversary walk). It is a LOT of fun, but you WILL have sore feet & legs. The TOTAL walk is close to 8 miles when you include the walk to the bus to take you over & your walk back to your car when done.
Hints:
Park on the south (troll) side of the bridge and take one of the school buses across (about $2.00 per person). Then when you are done you can just get in your car & go. The traffic coming south over the bridge after the walk is VERY slow & congested (think WDC on saturday).
Try to start as early as possible. The southbound lanes are open to BOTH north & south traffic during the walk. The last walkers allowed on the bridge have to be there by 11AM (as I recall), however they reopen one of the northbound lanes to vehicle traffic before that & it gets a little crouded with all the walkers being fourced over onto one northbound lane.
Bring a jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt you can tie around your waist. It will be pretty cool when you start, but you'll get hot. WEAR sunscreen, sun glasses and a hat.
There are LONG lines at the MANY Porta-Johns.
Pat & I will be in Kentucky for Labor Day or we'd REALLY enjoy joining the group.
