CALIFORNIA PERSONALIZED PLATES (how long a wait)

I ordered my personalized plates over three months ago. Still no word.
I was curious how long some of you had to wait. Is this the norm?

Hmm...that seems about right. Mine took that long...just check the mail for the card that tells you to make an appointment.

"Personalized plates will be available about 8-12 weeks after they are ordered online or the completed Special Interest License Plate Application is received by DMV. You will be notified by mail when your personalized plates are ready for pick up. Sequential license plates will be mailed directly to you at the address on your DMV vehicle record; you should receive them in approximately 4-6 weeks."

DMV for CA...

Great question, BUBEAR

One of my first surprises after relocating here from Walnut Creek was when my first Arizona PLP arrived in only a couple of weeks compared to the usual three to four months for California.

Considering the computer and other modern systems . . . what takes the DMV so long?

! ! ! ! ! !

AZ is now taking about 4-6 weeks. Took that long for the new vettes personalized plate as well as my new SSR one. btw the new AZ plates are not raised letters anymore. They are smooth/flat and there is now a sngle month/year sticker as compared to the individuall ones of the past.

Thanks for the info.

I guess I have no other choice than wait!!!

I was just getting a little worried that things were lost in the mail or system.

Talking Plates

I received my plates in about a month but that was 4 years ago, when I first got my truck. Call the DMV and check 3 months seems too long to me.

I'll need to renew my CA temporary I've been waiting so long.

AutoDan- Nice Chevy! My '63 used to look like that! It's rust/rustoleum red now. Someday, I will rid it of looking like the 600,000 miles it has traveled.

Actually, CA DMV did not properly handle the paper work and, after I waited for the card in the mail for nearly 4 months, I ended up calling DMV in Sacramento and they said they were at the local DMV office. When I got there, the plates were there; but, the paper work was fouled up and I couldn't get the registration slip to show the correct tag number. Finally got a senior person at the office to take care of it.

When I ordered my plates I was told that 4 months was a normal delay because of the lock downs at the rowdy Prisons. The License plate manufacturing area is where a lot of Shanks are also manufactured. Security at these sites are tight. San Quinton makes a lot of the Plates, and this is where the lock downs are occurring.

The other thing you have to remember, at least in Texas, is that they change out the group of people every few years, that review and okay your request for the name you have chosen.

For instance, on my Ford, my personalized plate actually says "FOCKS". When I applied for the personalized plates for the SSR, I had asked for "FOCKS2" as my first request, and "EZ DS IT" as the second.

They sent a letter saying my first request was declined. You can, however, protest decisions., You have to have a good reason, with documentation as to why you think you should be allowed to have a certain plate.

If anyone has any questions about personalized plates, in Texas,... PM me and I will give you my wife's phone number since she works in the Tax and Title Department in Texas.
