Hands Free
Just finished reading the new law regarding hands free cell phones in California. This law takes effect July 1, 2008. It also prohibits the use of our hand held two-way radios unless you have a hands free headset. I will be looking for possible solutions over the next few days. I will post my findings. Just thought some of you might wish to investigate and report your findings here, also. Has anyone already found and/or implemented a solution?

What doesn't make sense about the new law is the "hands free" part...no different holding a cell than a coffee cup, hamburger, cigarette and that's still legal...the danger is in the not paying attention to the traffic and your surroundings by becoming too engrossed in the conversation.

Most of the radios have VOX, Voice activated circuit, just plug in the hands free kit and do your thing. Or get yourself one of these speaker/mics and hold it at chest level, below the top of the door so it can't be seen and talk away. You don't have to be 'eating' the mic for it to work.

This was being discussed on the radio yesterday afternoon...the law, apparently, does NOT address texting or dialing...just talking (holding the phone to your ear)

Unfortunately, they will probably set the benchmark for other states to follow(AZ seems to copy a lot of CA laws/regulations)
Jersey already has this law in place. It used to be only a secondary offense. Now it is a primary.
"Tickets for using a cell phone behind the wheel increased tenfold after the state toughened its ban last month, when it made talking or text messaging on a handheld device reason enough to get pulled over.
The citation comes with a $100 fine.Citations went from about 1,300 in February to almost 13,000 in March, according to the Administrative Office of the Courts, which oversees court statistics.
By comparison, state courts had recorded 16,000 tickets issued for the offense in the 12 months leading up to March."
So the state made $1.3 million dollars from people using cell phones....
According to a story in the NY Times:
"Of the 300,000 car accidents in New Jersey in 2006, roughly 3,800 involved cellphones, and half of those involved drivers using hand-held phones, said Pam Fischer, director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety. Cellphones played a role in 11 of the 772 highway fatalities in 2006, with six involving hand-held phones and five involving hands-free phones"
So that's less than one percent were due to hand held phones.....

Thats the Ticket, I don't understand why'; Heck look at the inside of a Cops Car. Talk about distractions. I have talked to Cops about these new laws. They think that they are silly. It's an individual problem. Some people can't drive and talk at the same time. But now we are being set up to pay more fines and fee's.
