Rocky Mountain SSR Rally Planning Group needs YOUR HELP!

Fellow fanatics:

The ball is rolling on a Rocky Mountain SSR Rally in mid September 2007! Preliminary plans are as follows:
1. The event will be a Friday thru Sunday event
2. Estes Park will be our base of operations for the weekend. The Estes Park Convention and Tourism Bureau will be assisting us in the planning stages.
3. Saturday will be a tour of Rocky Mountain National Park to view the spectacular Mid-September fall colors against a majestic Rocky Mountain backdrop. Special accomodations for the SSR group are being investigated with the Park Service.
4. Saturday evening will include a group dinner or banquet of some sort.
5. Estes Park has a full schedule of arts and events in the fall, and Sunday will be yours to explore and have fun, either individually or with a group.
6. Accomodations are being investigated, and we have a really interesting option open to us - how about staying at the famous Stanley Hotel?

Here is where input from you is needed. I'm curious what members of the forum would consider an apporpriate personal budget for such a trip would be? Retail rate for the Stanley is $219/night for two adults/Queen size bed. I'm sure we could get a group rate along with banquet facilities and other activities, but I want to first check to see if this tracks with everyone so I have a baseline for my requests for proposals. I'm looking at this as a "mini-vacation" that includes the group and our SSRs, but also allows for side activities such as spa visits, shopping, sightseeing, etc. so attendees can maximize their experience in Colorado. I'm also not going to try to please everybody, but I would like to get an idea of the majority opinion of the Fanatics who would like to see an event in Colorado.

Besides, who would pass up the opportunity to see Focks walk the hallways of the Stanley muttering "Redrum!" (leave your Axe at home, though.)

I like you ideas! I can probably save up enough to stay at this famous hotel. But I don't want the room with that shriveled up old lady in it

About the Stanley (From about.com):

The Bottom Line: If you are a Stephen King fan, request room 217. It was in this room that King, inspired by the Stanley Hotel, wrote half of "The Shining." The ABC miniseries was filmed at the Stanley Hotel as well.

The Stanley Hotel Haunting: The ghosts in the Stanley Hotel aren't evil as in the book. Room 418 seems to have the most ghostly activity reported. In fact, the entire fourth floor of the Stanley Hotel (formerly the servants quarters) is quite active. Often, the sound of children playing in the halls of the Stanley can be heard, even when no children are present.

The Stanleys: The Stanley Hotel's original owners, F.O. and Flora Stanley, are said to haunt the hotel as well. Mr Stanley plays the piano in the music room, and frequents the billards room and the lobby.

Yea, JW - Count on Blueeyes to attend. We're not natives, but spent many years in Colorful Colorado, and there are few things better than cruisin' the Rockies in a top-down SSR (or Vette for that matter - did that many times!)

You're right that you'll never please everyone, but not everyone has to stay at the same hotel - it's not just the destination, it's the whole durn trip!

We'll see you in September (sounds like a song title) unless we see you in Laughlin in January.

Sounds fun... but I don't want to stay in a haunted hotel.... I hope there will be another option! I'm a scaredy cat!

I'm all over this, JW . . . . great idea.

Regarding room rates:
You might note, Mike in AZ got us fanatic members $229 per night rooms for $99 at the Marriott "Buttes" for the November 18th SSR & Vette Run ! ! Not complaining, but just a pointer for your further negotiations.

I'm sure you already know how I feel about an SSR Run to Colorado. Without a doubt, IMHO, the most centrally located place for all members WEST of the Mississippi. An easier run for Canadians, too.

Absolutely. Maybe a Friday night event, or Saturday afternoon. The drive at that time of year is fantastic.

Those roads can come at you fast at night especially if you are not familiar with them,, I would choose Saturday morning after breakfast, say @ 10:00a. that would give us a nice leasurely, get there in time to play a little, but have a snack,.. then plan a route back, @ 1:30- 2:00p. That would give people time to explore Estes Park and its stores. Maybe go see the massive herds of Elk.

Perhaps you could entice people further by adding this Webcam

There is more to see during the day time.

You're absolutely right on that count, Focks, and we will limit nighttime excursions as much as we can. We will want to take at least half the day Saturday as a group in Rocky Mountain National Park, though. Lori and I will be "taking one for the team" and working out distances and travel times, as well as best routes and activities along those routes. A trip to Central City/Blackhawk is absolutely on the table, though, we just need to figure out how to balance it with everything else while maximizing the early fall daylight.

Let me assure everyone we will secure more than one place to stay in Estes Park. If you're unsure about the Stanley, other options will be available. I think the banquet will be held there, however.

Overall I'm pleased with the response and I think I have enough information to move forward with the plans. I'll keep you posted, and will start a new thread with firm dates, plans and details soon.

Mike & Debbie too

We're putting it on our calendar.

First look is about 11-12 hours rolling time (not including stops) from Phoenix for about 865 miles one way.

Looks like an overnight in Farmington, NM or Moab, UT. That makes it two 400-450mile days on the road from Phoenix. Not too bad a trip.

If the So. Cal SSRs want to overnight here, you can caravan with us.

Mikey
