Chevy SSR Who?: Russian GAZ Concept

From http://autonewsguide.com/news/Chevy-...-GAZ-Concept/:

Way back, when Uncle Joe Stalin was advising President Roosevelt on where to stick his Yalta, the Soviet Union's workhorse was the GAZ truck. As the story goes, GAZ trucks were so tough, on cold days Russians would start them by firing a 75mm shell into the engine. Once running, they could power through Russian hardtack as if it were ground-up tea cookies. Now, a Moscow tuning shop is creating a street rod from an old GAZ-51, using a rehabbed cabin and a wooden bed. It's destined for coolness, though old Joe probably would have disappeared the team for showing a bit too much individuality. – Mike Spinelli

Russian tuners turn toward next project: a "varnished" Hot Rod pickup

From: http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/11/r...d-hot-rod-pic/

Remember that awesome Volga Roadster from a few months ago, the BMW 6-Series rebody that looked like a Ford 49 concept car? Well, the guys who did that custom rod are at it again. This time they have turned their attention to an old Soviet truck. It might not sound as sexy as the Russian Fisker alternative, but let us explain.

The old Soviet GAZ-51 truck is an icon in Russia. These trucks have been around since the dawn of man and although they never stood out as a design leader, a hot rod based on one would be very cool and very Russian. Using a Cadillac Escalade EXT as a starting point, the Pemespiba team from Moscow will slap on a GAZ-51 cabin and build a wooden bed "from a varnished tree" (did they varnish the wood while it was still growing roots or after they cut the tree down?). If they can put it together with even half the style and workmanship of the V8 Roadster, it should be stunning.

That last conceptual design looks like it could be a pretty good hunting vehicle. Stout enough to get you where you are going hgh enough off the ground to be comfortable and powerful enough to get you home again.

I wonder if the chassis/running gear is from one of the many thousands of stolen vehicles that are shipped from the USA to former Soviet-bloc countries.

As far as old military trucks, I'd just love to have myself a GMC 2 1/2 Ton 6x6. I recall seeing a similar one in the weeds during the HRPT this past summer.
