Moorhead City Council Monday night approved spending $34,500 on a 2004 Chevrolet SSR, a sleek cross between a pickup and a Corvette convertible.
DARE officer Deric Swenson told the council the SSR would replace the 1984 Corvette that has been the DARE car since 1998.
He said the Corvette has racked up 91,000 miles and required $2,800 in repairs the past two years.
A high-profile, splashy vehicle acts as a symbol for the DARE program and reminds children of its lessons, Swenson said.
About 7,000 Moorhead sixth-graders have completed the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in 15 years.
The council approved the purchase, which will draw money from a fund generated by property forfeited by drunken drivers, on a 7-1 vote.
The lone dissenter was Greg Lemke, a Fargo police sergeant who for many years worked with the DARE program in North Dakota.
"That seems awful steep to me," he said of the price tag.
The $35,000 price, offered by The Big Lot, 2710 2nd Ave. N., includes a discount of more than $12,000 from the sticker.
Police Chief Grant Weyland defended the purchase, saying the truck will only be used for special occasions.
"Obviously, a car is not going to keep kids off drugs," Swenson said.
I would beg to differ with this opinion. I believe that if the kids are taught that in order to have something they really want, such as an SSR, then drugs are not the way to get there. Cars have been a part of my life since the first Hot Wheels went on shelves in late 1967. I have been invovled with cars over thirty years and drugs do not play a part in my life. I learned early on to respect other people and things, and it haas done well for my life.
I hope others will follow in this manner, to make thewmselves and the world around them better, instead of thowing it away.

If they use the vehicles as a tool for kids yes I say that it will help with their future. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. So I think they should go for it.
I bought a SSR model it is a replica of a Dare SSR from a town up north. Has a Lion standing firm with arms crossed on the bed cover and other pin stripes. Maybe they could get models made up to match the paint scheme and sell as a fund raiser for expenses.
Thank you all for your support. We still have not purchased the vehicle, so we have not locked a price yet. A correction to the article. What I had originally said was that my program is not obviously designed to keep kids off of drugs by simply having a cool car. I went on to say that the car would be a great P.R. vehicle and that the car would be symbolic to the program and remind the kids of the many lessons they have learned. So I was trying to gain support for the car, I was not making a negative statement like the article stated with my final quote.
Thanks again,
Officer Swenson

P.S. Does anyone know of any other city in the United States that currently has an SSR as a DARE vehicle?
The model I got off Ebay says Calvert County Sherriff. I can't remember for sure what the ad said but I think it was New Jersey or the Mass. area.
I am not sure if this was made for the real one being used for the local authorities but on the side of the model it also said this vehicle was paid for from the confiscated drug money . I will try to get a picture posted.

Thanks for stopping in - should the Dept purchase the SSR - you will have a wealth of knowledge here to help...
I posted the newsstory because it was the first I'd heard of a DARE SSR... MarcNY (a moderator) took a photo of an SSR w/ PD markings at last years Woodward Dream Cruise - not sure if that was a DARE vehicle...

Having been a former Police Commissioner in our town I would have loved to had a chance to buy an SSR for one of our police vehicles or maybe even try to get our county to purchase one as their DARE vehicle.

I noticed it was silver. I guess they wanted a stealth vehicle no one would notice! LOL

I saw just a couple of seconds of a news story last night on Fargo's TV11 that showed the new Moorhead PD's SSR DARE car. I wish I'd seen the whole thing, but it sure looked interesting. It didn't seem to have a wild paint job as much as it had a lot of graphics on the doors, etc.
humm- wouldnt it be simpler all the way `round to just shoot the drug dealers
that supply the stuff in the first place? We've spent billions in this country over the last 30 years and our prisons are filled with ppl that have gotten caught selling, buying and using. If we are truly in a "war against drugs" eliminate the suppliers and that will (hopefully) reduce the users. I question the positive connection between a cool car(Camero,`vette,SSR)and a 12yo kid telling a dealer(who he probably knows from the neighborhood)no to the purchase of drugs. A 12yo does not think further into the future than probably 15 minutes and cant possibly relate that if he says NO to drugs he will end up with a great ride years from now!
