MAGGIE VALLEY – The Chevy SSR: half-car, half-truck, and the source of 100 percent obsession.
These vehicles, manufactured between 2003 and 2006, look like a modern version of a 1930s gangster car and boast a speedy Corvette engine. Only 25,000 were ever made, and they’ve become something of a cult icon to car fans.
Starting Friday, dozens of SSRs will converge on Maggie Valley for the fourth annual Chevy SSR Auto Show. The show was started by two local SSR owners, Gina and Danny Mitchell.
“When I saw it, I just fell in love with it,” Gina Mitchell says of her SSR. “It’s so rare and so different. One day, they’re destined to be collectors items. They’re smooth, and they’re fast.”
There are only a handful of the vehicles in Western North Carolina, so the Mitchells met most of the SSR owners they know through an online fan club forum called SSRfanatic.com. Gina publicized her idea for a show through the forum, and it quickly gained interest. The first year, 30 cars showed up. By the third year, 116 poured in.
It wasn’t hard to convince SSR fans to come out for the Maggie Valley show.
“They come up here to ride the mountains and curves,” Mitchell said. “We just have such a beautiful landscape here.”
This year, SSR fans are coming from as far away as California and Canada. Look for a blur of colorful vehicles on the region’s roads this weekend — the Mitchells are coordinating drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway and into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The cars will even brave the infamous Tail of the Dragon in Graham County.
The SSR show will be held Friday-Sunday at the Maggie Valley Inn and Conference Center in Maggie Valley. Contact Danny or Gina Mitchell at 926-1700 for more information.

Rich - thanks for the news re: Maggie SSR Run. Are you aware of any other car shows coming up in the Fresno/Kingsburg area soon? If not, what to you think of a SSR run to Sequoia area?

I'm most likely going to set up a Sequoia (Generals Highway Roadster Run) in August. I'm going to try to tie it into the Crawdad and Jazz festival that Kingsburg has.
Tentative date: Sept 19th, 2009
Yeah - it's kinda hot in the Valley then, but at the 7,500 foot level in Sequoia - it should be beautiful!!!!

Keith, a company called SMoky Mtn News interviewed me last week for this. The Maggie Valley Chamber of Commerce hired them to promote the valley and our events.
The interviewer told me she would be submitting it to larger media outlets in the region and that it might get picked up!!!
Looks like Asheville Picked it up. She was trying for large towns to like Charlotte, NC, Raleigh NC, Atlanta, Ga, Knoxville, TN etc
I'll have try and find out what day this was in the Asheville paper and get a copy.

I saw that they knew a bunch about SSR's and Fanatics - so I figured you had talked to somebody.
I made up a 'press release' for a couple of my local events and mailed those directly to the papers in the area. The little paper in Kingsburg ran my release, while the bigger paper in Fresno sent out a reporter and photographer!
