1/5/10

(Midland)- 46 year old Michelle Renee Cogan is in extremely critical condition following a hit and run crash Tuesday night in Midland.

According to Midland Police, Cogan may have stepped out in front of a car and was hit near Midland Drive and Neely at about 7:15pm.

Police say she was hit by a Green Ford Mustang.

That car left the scene, and may have damage to the front hood scoop.

Police say they may have recovered a part of it at the scene.

Cogan was then hit by a Red SSR Truck that witnessess told Police may not have even realized they hit her.

Police say they are looking for the driver of the mustang, who could face Felony charges if Cogan's condition worsens.

Police tell CBS 7 that Alcohol was a contributing factor.

UPDATE: Police release victim's name in Tuesday night hit and run

Midland police pleaded for help Tuesday night in trying to locate the motorist who struck a woman, sending her over 100 feet from impact, who then ran over her body and fled the scene.

“We need the citizens’ help out on this one,” MPD officer C.W. Owen said.

Eyewitnesses told investigators that 46-year-old Michelle Cogan was walking across Midland Drive from the shopping center headed east to the Renaissance Apartments near Neely Avenue when she was hit by an early-2000s model convertible green or blue Ford Mustang traveling south on Midland Drive. Police believe she may have been intoxicated and returning home from a nearby liquor store.

Owen said the woman was thrown about 105-115 feet into the southbound center lane of traffic.

The driver of the Mustang then ran over Cogan, accelerated the car’s speed and fled the scene, witnesses said.

A second vehicle, a red Chevy SSR pickup, then ran over the victim’s legs. Police are not seeking the driver of the truck, however, believing the driver was unable to distinguish the woman from road debris.

EMS crews and paramedics arrived at the scene at 6:51 p.m. and transported the woman to the hospital. Cogan was said to have suffered massive internal injuries and severe head trauma. Authorities said she was on life support and her injuries

could be fatal.

Police are asking for any information in the accident. Investigators said Tuesday they would like to talk to the driver of the pickup and believe he or she may be a key witness in the case; that driver is not being looked upon as a possible suspect, said Owen.

Witnesses told police that the driver possibly might not have known he or she had struck a person and might have thought they had instead hit debris in the street.

The driver of the Mustang, though, could face charges including failure to stop and render aid and possible manslaughter charges if the victim dies from her injuries.

Investigators believe the driver realized that he or she had struck a person and that’s why they sped up and fled the scene. The speed limit for that stretch of Midland Drive is 40 mph.

Anyone with information to the accident is urged to contact authorities. MPD can be reached at 685-7108; anonymous tips can also be submitted online at Midland Crime Stoppers or at 694-TIPS.

BREAKING NEWS: Police arrest teen in deadly Tuesday night hit-and-run
From Staff Reports
Published: Thursday, January 7, 2010 1:44 PM CST
Midland police announced Thursday they have arrested a 16-year-old male in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left a 46-year-old woman dead.

The 16-year-old, whose name will not be released because he is a juvenile, was arrested for failure to stop and render aid, which is a third degree felony, according to a Midland Police Department release.

He was wanted in connection with an accident that occurred around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Midland Drive and Neely Avenue.

Witnesses told officers that 46-year-old Michelle Cogan was crossing Midland Drive from west to east when she was struck by a green, early 2000 model convertible Ford Mustang.

After the impact, Cogan was knocked from the southbound lane into the outside southbound lane where her legs were then run over by a red Chevy SSR pickup, police said. Both vehicles fled the scene.

The driver of the pickup was located Wednesday and after speaking with police, no charges were filed, according to the release.
Traffic investigators then located the driver of the Ford Mustang through a Midland Crime Stoppers tip, the release says. They were advised the 16-year-old male suspect fled the scene because he was scared.

Cogan was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital Tuesday and died as a result of her injuries on Wednesday afternoon.

Midland Police Traffic investigators urge that whenever a person is involved in a traffic accident they should remain on the scene.
