Mom accused of child neglect
April 6, 2007 05:12 AM PDT

New Media Producer: Amanda Lents

A teenager is safe Friday morning after her mom is accused of trying to drive from Evansville to Terre Haute with her daughter locked in the back of a pick-up truck.

Gibson County Dispatch got a call of a possible abduction around 7:30 Thursday night at the Hucks gas station in Ft. Branch.

Officers followed a yellow Chevy S-S-R north on 41 into Knox County and finally stopped the vehicle at the Decker turn-off.

36-year-old Carol Smith of Terre Haute told deputies her 14-year-old daughter was locked in the back of the truck because there were only two seats, and her mother was in the passenger seat.

Deputies say there was no lighting or heat in the back of the truck where her daughter was confined, and that it was 39-degrees outside.

Smith says they stopped to give her food and water and didn't see a problem. She was charged with neglect of a dependant and is now out of jail on a $6,500 bond.

Ok we have all thought/talked/joked about doing this So if there was a light and heat we could do it? What if she had put Grandma back there? would that have been ok?
