2003 Chevy SSR named best looking in its category by national policing magazine
Published Wednesday January 20th, 2010

MIRAMICHI - With their sleek-looking Dodge Charger cruisers and classic black and white paint jobs that evoke images of the LAPD, the Miramichi Police Force is well-accustomed to riding in style.

And Canada's national police force magazine took notice, giving Miramichi's municipal force some serious credibility, and a few style points, in a list published in the latest edition of Blue Line Magazine, highlighting Canada's best-dressed vehicles.

The modified Chevrolet SSR, which is usually trotted out in parades and special events, was named the best-looking police promotional vehicle in Blue Line's January edition.

"Miramichi's design is clean and simple, conveying both fun and professionalism without looking like it's just pandering to youth," reads the Blue Line review.

"Plus, unlike some other 'clown car' entries, this one looks like it could pull someone over if need be."

The SSR recently replaced Miramichi's iconic late 1970s Corvette Stingray, and the story of how it came into the force's possession is far from conventional.

Sgt. Bob Bruce said the vehicle was originally purchased in 2003 in British Columbia for $71,000.

A year later it was stolen, with insurance paying the previous owner $66,000, but the vehicle was nowhere to be found.

Four years later, in 2008, it was uncovered in Miramichi, hidden in the woods, and police traced the theft back to a 36-year-old man from Miramichi.

The man was found guilty and ordered to pay restitution for the theft.

Bruce said the police force worked with the insurance company, and negotiated an agreement for the force to buy the SSR for $10,000.

The MPF restored the vehicle to pristine condition, painted it black and white and plastered sharp-looking decals on either side. On the rear of the vehicle are the words, "Stolen ...recovered and recycled by the MPF."

This isn't the first time the Miramichi Police Force has been recognized by Blue Line Magazine. In 2007, Miramichi took home top honours for having the coolest looking basic patrol vehicle design in the nation.

This 2003 Miramichi Police Force Chevy SSR was voted best-dressed promotional vehicle by national policing magazine Blue Line.

An interesting story.
I'm glad it was recovered and recycled into an eye catching useful vehicle for the community.
