My SSR: "Kate" a Haughty Redhead, '06 Redline FPR 6 spd. #23333 Build Date 2/16/06
Signature #8 - Present Day
Gil de Ferran, then driving for Penske Racing, was the 2003 Indianapolis 500 race winner. Penske tends to keep a Pace Vehicle from its race victories but in this instance was not able to obtain any of the three Pace SSR’s. I do find it curious he did not attempt to purchase backup pace Signature #4 when it was sold at auction though.
Over a year ago I contacted the Penske Museum in Scottsdale and spoke with Mr Hossa who had managed de Ferrans in 2003. Although he could not confirm it he thought they had purchased a Signature Series SSR and it was stored somewhere in the eastern states. It took a while but I have finally confirmed its location and status.
Penske purchased Signature #8 at auction and had Wheel to Wheel, the company that converted the other Pace SSR’s, build it so as to be identical to the original Pace trucks. I have been unable to obtain any pictures from Penske and Wheel to Wheel is no longer in business.
Signature #8, in the form of a 2003 Indianapolis 500 Pace SSR, now resides in the Penske Restoration storage facility at Auburn Hills, MI. Penske Restoration is not open to the public. I have not been able to confirm if the art works and scrapbook remained with the vehicle.

So that Sig is taken off the charts forever eh?... I was curious as to what was changed on it so I looked up the Indy changes for it....
Exteriors receive a subtle silver ghost-flame paint scheme across the hood, front fenders and doors, a safety strobe light bar recessed into the tailgate, polished stock cast aluminum wheels and race event graphics. Inside, racing-type safety belts have been added. Inclusion of heavy-duty engine and transmission oil coolers, higher rate springs and shocks, and a lower restriction exhaust system provide further assurance of optimum performance in the harsh environment of professional racing.
