Silver over Black TuTone - American HotRod

Fiday September 22, while relaxing in my Saudi apartment this last weekend, I decide to catch up on all the antics and drama that always pervades the atmosphere in the Discovery Channel's American Hotrod series with Boyd Coddington.

The satellite channel here in Saudi aired Episode 33 which debuted in the states on July 8, so you can see what we are offered from the series is a little behind the times.

This series build involved chopping a pristine '59 Impala tudor sedan to create another Boyd styled low rider.

In the background of one of the shop scenes, during the disassembly of the '59, a rear shot of a gleaming Silver over Black SSR roadster was parked in the center shop aisle.

Nice to see another gorgeous roadster sitting in the background in Boyd's shop.

Obviously, someone on location in Boyd's shop the day the episode was shot has good taste in their vehicle choice!

Boyd Coddington built an SSR in those colors. First shot is the artist's rendering, other shots are of the truck on EBay. The last shot is of the Whatthehaye at SEMA 04.

The truck was done before the 06 two-tones became available. I can't remember the EBay details, but I think it was an 05. When I first saw the rendering, I really liked it, and was pretty sure that's what I wanted my next SSR to look like. The truck he produced didn't come off quite like the rendering, but still looked good. When GM made the announcement that two-tones were going to be produced, I was really sure.

One one of his shows, talking about the Whatthehaye, Coddington said that he chose silver on black for it because he didn't want to lose the impact of the curves by using a bright color

Seemed to make sense. Consistent comments at shows are about how classy or retro the truck looks.

Thank Ray, just love that rendering. Gotta agree with Boyd as the SSR (IMHO) looks better in dark colors.

Did he do anything to it?

Why does it look like all he did was give it the 2-tone treatment and some different shoes? In the artist's rendering, it has what looks like an orange pinstripe separating the two colors and it's dropped a lot. It looks very sharp and certainly doable. I'm surprised Boyd didn't go all the way with it.

Last day to vote for #19!
