SSR fatal (solo) crash in California
I got home late last night from my Oregon trip, and had a PM asking if I had heard of this. I didn't see the story posted yet, so thought I'd pass on the news.
The driver is said to be from Carmel Valley... Not sure if we have a fanatic from there???
(I drove on I-5 last night about 40 miles south of where this happened - 70 mph is the posted speed on this stretch:
Man killed in single-car crash near Westley
PUBLISHED SATURDAY, SEP. 25, 2010
A 70-year-old man from Carmel Valley died Friday after his vehicle went off Interstate 5 just south of Westley and rolled several times down an embankment, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending notification of his family.
No other vehicles were involved and no passengers were in the vehicle.
The crash occurred about 12:15 p.m.
The man was driving a 2006 Chevrolet SSR north on I-5 about 70 mph in the right lane. The vehicle moved to the right and went off the road and down the embankment before it overturned and came to rest on its wheels in a dirt field east of the freeway, according to the CHP.
The man was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
The CHP said alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Oh that's terrible. I wonder what happened to him, maybe he had a heart attack ? Poor guy. The only thing you can say is at least he went doing something he enjoyed. I hope he passed out or something before he went over the edge, that must have been terrifying. Will have to pray for his family, and God bless him.
So sorry to hear about this fatality. Sad. I had a pretty bad crash myself yesterday. My wife and I were wearing our seat belts. One of my first thoughts was what if we hadn't been buckled up. I only wish the person in California had been wearing his belt. He might be telling us how lucky he feels to be here just as I am. I will pray for his family.

Sorry to hear about the fatal crash. When in CA, I live between Carmel and Big Sur and travel quite often to Carmel valley for lunch and diner. The only R that I have seen in the town during my passes has been a slingshot. I have never been able to make contact with the owner even though I have left several messages on his windshield. Unfortunately I just returned to NJ last week but I will make contact with a few friends and see what I can find out. If I receive any info I will pass it on.

talkin about bcbear10. Thankfully, he's alive and well on post #7
I hope it was not the black SSR 06 that was at the Vintage races on Saturday. I was hoping to talk to the owner but he took off before I made it over again.

Riding in the back of the '52 Ford P/U from the Bay to the Beach in the summertime was the BEST ! All of us neighborhood kids would ride in the back over the Coast Mountains to Half Moon Bay and evena t break-neck speeds of 50-55 MPH, it was As Good as it Gets !! We had canteens full of iced water, swim fins and masks, towels, and flip flops....
Who could ask for more !
No Sisters to fight with, cause they wouldn't ride in the Back!
If any guy dis-agreed with you, you'd give 'em a "knuckle"...

The only information I show in the VIN registry that could be considered remotely close is "SLVRSSR" in Newport Beach that has a 2006 . Only 3 posts, the last in 6/2007, and nothing in their Profile that gives any clue as to name or age.
There are 2 or 3 2006 for sale in SoCal.
I thought of that because of the fellow that died last year after 1 or 2 days of ownership.
**From the pictures I mistakenly thought this was a but as later stated by the owners relatives it was a Final Production Run.

Sad to hear of any fatality. The old safety slogan "Room To Live" refers to the built in area in all cars where you have the best chance to survive an auto crash. The primary way to stay in there is to wear your seat belt. If an individual chooses not to increase their chances for survival they and their loved ones suffer.
It is impressive how well the SSR holds up during a rollover. Has any one seen an SSR that has had a total roof/windshield collapse? I remember an Austin-Healy flat to the ground, hood to deck, and my friend survived. He was a mess, but did live.
Wear the belts and helmets and stay alive.

That was my dad that crashed his SSR. I don't know why he wasn't wearing his seatbelt, he taught me to. Maybe that was a mistake.
He did love his car, his "Hotrod" as he called it. He was doing what he loved, and I'm pretty sure he would have preferred to die as he did..and also that the SSR went with him.
I hope my son remembers forever their drive in the SSR up to Infinian Raceway last year.
Last Friday was a very shocking day for the family, and we appreciate your thoughts and prayers.
~~Dad, I hope you and your Hotrod are in the lead on your race to heaven, where I will see you one day. I love you!~~
