Just purchased a 2006 SSR 6-speed

A new guy on board (Tony) who just bought a silver SSR 6-speed with 5,000 miles from original owner.I live in north west Arizona.I have a few questions...am I going to have any overheating concerns with the 2006 year? and is not having a spare a concern?Does the tire kit allow one to have peace of mind in case of a flat tire or should I consider buying good year run flats like the corvette has?...I'm looking forward to this forum and getting together for some fun in the sun.........

CONGRATS and WELCOME, Tony . . . from Beautiful Downtown Tucson. Sounds like you found a keeper.

The Doophus is about to turn 7 and has never gone above 210 Degrees and, knock on wood, has yet to have a flat. I do have Mike in AZ's AUX Fan installed and a spare tucked in the bed just in case but . . .

! ! ! ! ! !

Hey Tony, Welcome from one of the SoCal Nuts. I have a and you will find they were only made in 06 as you read more. I have added two devices from a member in AZ (Mink in AZ) www.Simple-engineering.com and found piece of mind. I added his spare tire kit allowing me to have a spare and ot take space from the bed. I changed my Main Fan because they have a reputation of dying, not if but when, and I am a logn distance driver. My is pushing 110,000.

Check out this thread and maybe you can meet a bunch of us in Laughlin in January.

My SSR has 5,000 miles. Should I wait to see any temp increases before considering an AUX FAN that Simple Engineering has(Mike In Arizona)? At what mileage do these fans fail? Has GM put out a service bulletin regarding fan failure and overheading?

Trip to Laughlin sounds good.Maybe I can make it up there without overheating(just kidding). What are your thoughs about fan replacement on a 5,000 mile SSR?Should I wait till the weather gets hot again in summer and drive it now with our cool arizona temps or just go ahead and replace /add aux fan from Mike in Arizona?

Congratulations! I will never forget the feeling when the guy I traded for Old Red with drove him up out front. I was afraid he would change his mind.

Another welcome from a SoCal nut.
As for replacing the main fan, Mine died on me while I was in a SSR Rally passing though four corners (NM,UT,AZ,CO) and lucky me, Mike in AZ was with us and he had a new one in a box. I think I had about 12K miles on my SSR at the time and that been four years now. It still running like new.
Hope you can join us at Laughlin next month.

Another newbie

Just picked up an '06 basic with 6k of road time. I have enjoyed reading everything from this group of lovers. Looks like there is a lot of experience out there, my learning curve just got down to a bump... Thanks all

Congrats on scoring a low mile SSR. If you don't want to switch the fan out I would suggest having the replacement fan in your garage for when the inevitable happens. I have a full size spare in my bed sitting face down that allows storage in the wheel well for the jack and other tools. One thing you might not know is that once the roof cycle has started you can roll the tires at low speed ( makes for a lot of jaw dropping and for raising/lowering the top in stop and go traffic)

I have a PB 2006 6-speed (92,000 miles) with both a spare tire kit and Mike's AUX fan. You will overheat in Arizona summer traffic until you add to your cooling capabilities. Mike is a great guy, and he has thoroughly engineered a solution that is easy to install and that he stands behind 100%. As for the spare tire kit, it takes 1/2 a day to flatbed my truck to the tire store, and several days to get the tire (when I have phone reception), but I also travel where phone service is not available, and few cars travel, and I love being able to change my flat and be on my way inside of 45 minutes. The kit is perfect, and the gate down can hold the flat without displacing the nine sets of clothing my wife needs to take for a weekend trip.

I would say replace the main fan now and put the OEM on the shelf in case someone else needs one in an emergency. You can either loan it to them for shippping costs or sell it if that is your mind set. I think the piece of mind is worth it since it is likely to die at the least convenient time. We saw this with RRR in Four Corners and a couple of first timers in Laughlin in 2010 or 2011. Lookk forward to meeting you.

Good question, Tony.

I still have the original fan . . . hopefully, Mike's AUX Fan will save me if and/or when the original croaks on me.

I want to thank everone on this forum for their input on the fan replacement and overheating concerns that I have, but I have to ask this question.Since the 2006 SSR has the same 6.0 liter engine as the corvette is the cooling system different than the SSR?I know the SSR weighs more than the vette, but is the radiator and fans different in what the vette has?Is there anyone in Arizona that has a 2005 or 2006 that has overheating problems?I also noted a service bulletin#050601034 dated Nov1st 2005 that GM put out regarding Engine and cooling fan inoperative.I would have thought that the problem would have been addressed and corrected in the 6.0 by increasing the air flow....Hey what do I know.....Thanks Tony

Hello Tony,
I too am a new SSR owner.
My 2006 auto SSR just arrived Monday morning from Texas.

It was covered in frost.
I got all the importation and inspections done on it yesterday.
Now I a need a warm sunny day to try it out
