Phoenix back country route info

We'll be in Scottsdale Sunday visiting family, leaving for Flagstaff Monday morning.

I like taking the scenic routes -headed to Payson, then up thru Strawberry, have to stop in Happy Jack, just to say we've been there! On past Mormom Lake to Flagstaff.

So, you locals, any problem with going this way? (like do the local LEOs patroll 87 into Payson alot?)

And anyone up for some adventure, you're welcome to come along

That is a nice route, a bit too far for us westsiders.

There is a nice deli in Payson right on the way with a great secret back patio, wish I could recall the name.

Happy Jack is a little cabin area, I have a friend with one there. I put a couple doors in for her.

There is a little school museum in Strawberry.

Do it! It's a very scenic drive, make sure you watch for deer and elk as you approach the higher elevations when you top the Mogollon Rim.

Be advised that traffic will be heavy this weekend on the route you're planning to take, Mormon Lake hosts their annual rodeo this Labor Day weekend. It WILL be crazy this weekend, a bunch of drunk rodeo fans (been there, done that) so be careful.

You also have the option of heading north from Happy Jack toward Winslow, you can stop and see Meteor Crater, very impressive, a mile wide. NASA trained Apollo astronauts for moon landings in the bottom of the crater in the sixties and seventies.
