I am grateful you included the info about Wester's shop. The next time I go to Calgary, I would consider going to him for a tune. I drove to Calgary from Vancouver and back to Vancouver on the holiday weekend in August - WITH THE ROOF DOWN ALL THE WAY! What a great trip.
At this point, I am not sure if I can make Penticton because of work commitments. I will try.
Don
Hi, Don
Gears are going in tomorrow. Having it done at my local Chevy dealer. I'm taking the truck to Wester's September 27th - taking the loooooong way to Edmonton.
I'll let you know how it all works out. I'm curious how much he can change, and how he protects the tune from overzealous GM techs.
Don, it's against the rules to miss Penticton 2 years in a row.

ray, after you put your gears in your truck might act strange, might act like it has no power etc, turn off traction control , i did my 456 gears and that was the only way i could drive it home, yours is a 6 sd so maybe it will be ok, just a heads -up . nathan

Thanks,
I'll be like a kid waiting for Christmas tomorrow. The 6 speed doesn't have traction control, so that shouldn't be a problem. Not sure if the ABS system will be affected.
Should be a fun drive home comparing shift points. I wanted to do the 4:56 gears, but the set needed for the 6 speed doesn't exist anymore.

my rear brakes felt a little grabby after my gears , put the diablo-sport tuner in & everything works great together . are you going to put a tuner in yours? or when westers compensates for speedo do you get a tune also?

According to Jim Gnitecki, Westers is very thorough about retuning the truck. Looking forward to watching him work his magic.

Just got home with the 4:10 gears installed. Love it!!!!!
Seems more civilized at all speeds, no noise from the new gears. 5th is now useable on the highway. Overall, good decision. Looking forward to the road trip to Alberta. Should be a blast running through the twisties in the Kootenays.
GM Parts (bearings, etc) and labour was about $750, so $850 or so with taxes.
Gear set was purchased from J & S in Huntington Beach. Gear set was about $375 US plus shipping and brokerage.
GM wanted over $1000 Canadian for the gears.

I hath returned
Just back from Westers.
Left work a little early, but still did not get there till 5. Solid two hour drive at speeds you are not supposed to do but there was one pit stop to fill the SSR anf empty me.
I get the Westers.... what a hoot... no worries about getting lost.
Turns out his SSR is a match to my newest one. His is also an Aqua 2005, only 7000k on it so less than 5000 miles. Anyway options etc are an exact match to my Bubalou
Tuning the PCM did not take long, not much to see. Asked him at one point what he was doing...'just changing ones and zeros...'
Have not had much of a chance to try it out as it was a 2 hour run back here. The shifts are faster and firmer for sure. Will test out the power aspects Saturday.

Hey. How will you be coming at it, from the east or the west. I know you are west but don't know your stop before Tilley.
You will be on the #1 either way. As I said from Calgary it is a comfortable 2 hours with no stops... coming from the east I think it is about 90k from the Hat.
Coming from the west you will drive past Brooks, another 15 or so K and the turn off to Tilley is on your right. About 4 kms off the #1 and you are there. He is on your left as you get into the middle of town. Old service station.. pumps gone, handful of very nice cars scattered around the lot

lots of spots , tuesday to saturdays i can find a spot, 50 to 200 cars at each spot , i've only had 4 ssr's together at once, too hard to get all together , some day we'll get it together , maybe 10 -12 at once

Heading to Lake Louise next month and i am sure all the SSRs will be tucked away nicely, but I will keep my eyes peeled nevertheless. Looks like we will be experiencing some of Canada's coldest temperatures during our short visit.
Can we assume the roads are pretty clear up that way? We are renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle regardless. Also can one access Glacier National Park at this time of year or is it just too buried in snow?
Thanks in advance for any tourism help you can provide.

Hi, On weather, there is a huge range depending on systems and wind direction. It could be anywhere from +40 to -40. You won't really know until a few days before your visit. Right now the long term forecast for around the first of Feb looks just a little above average. Here is a link to the weather network for banff (same as Lake Louise) Banff, Alberta - Weather Forecast - The Weather Network
Regarding Glacier National Park, I actually prefer that area to Banff... not as commercial. You can get there, but it is not a short drive. If you see reference to Waterton... that is the Canadian side of the same park.
Here is a mapquest link for Banff to Waterton. You could consider highway 93, but that can be really iffy this time of year.
