A major fire is burning on the main street in Niagara-ON-The Lake, Ontario. It started just after lunch today and has taken 3 buildings so far. I just got back from seeing it and it is mess. The buildings are very old and one against the other. For anyone who has been on the Niagara Falls run, these buildings are directly in front of where we take our photo on the main street with the clock tower in the background. It will surely change the face of that beautiful town.
Not good...hope they rebuild with something of the same style and era. Keeping our small towns intact is not easy with everyone moving to the suburbs and big box stores.
How's the fire/damage? We have not heard anything at all about this on the news
They managed to keep the fire contained to 3 buildings with the help of a
2nd ladder truck from another city. Damage is estimated in the millions. They had to bring in a large excavator during the fire to try and knock part of the one building down as they could not get to the fire with all the ceilings over ceilings and false walls that alot of the buildings have from years of renovations. Ironically the fire started in what was the original fire station in the town 80+ years ago.
Rebel, the liquor store survived. The buildings to the left of it didn't. I tried to get a photo that showed them but could not find one. The one I posted at least gave ones that have been to the Old Town an idea of the area involved. My kids tell me there are videos on you tube showing more.
not rebuilding yet
rumour has it waiting on permits
might be heritage permits or setback permits or environmental permits or building permits or permits for the permits
or could be lack of cash for the permits
really i have no idea other than no "chement" workers on site to lay the blocks
stay tuned the only thing that stays the same is change !
