Fed Up with UPS Brokerage Fees?

This post is for Sparky and others of us in Canada who have experienced the unanticipated brokerage charges when we get UPS packages delivered across the border. Seems someone was mad enough in BC to take UPS to court in a class action suit.

2008 BCSC 654 MacFarlane v. United Parcel Service Canada Ltd.

UPS tried to get the case thrown out of court and weren't successful. More to come as I will be following this case to see how it comes out.

Ditto. I know the Postal Service has taken a lot of abuse over the years, but at least they don't charge exorbitant brokerage fees!

the fellow leading the class action suit against ups is a bigwig in telus,,the local phone company,,,

recently when i recieved some boat parts via ups,,,i was told that if i had got them shipped expedited the shipping would have been $55 instead of $40,,but by shipping expedited the brokerage fee is waived,,,the brokerage fee on that shipment was $75

i haven't tried it yet..

Have you guys considered FedEx Ground?

I've always had great luck with them . . . both rates and service.

That's interesting.... if what you are told about expedited shipping is true, makes me hope even more MacFarlane wins his case.

Most of the shipping options I have seen are either UPS or USPS. The issue hasn't been shipping costs, as I think they are similar, but the brokerage fees to bring it across the border.

As a shipper, we are reluctant to send parts into Canada by usps since there is no way to track the shipment and if the buyer claims they did not recieve it we have limited recourse.

I import a lot of boat parts and accessories, and unfortunately, way too many SSR parts.

We're within an hour of the US border, so as much as possible I use UPS and FedEx with my broker's US warehouse address. My broker picks up, does the brokerage, and delivers, for significantly less than the UPS charges.

If something need to come directly via UPS or FedEx, I have the shippers specify on the invoice to use my broker, with his name address and phone number on the invoice. Typically, less than half of the UPS costs.

most times the buyer doesn't have a choice as to what shipper.

Indeed, and I did just that last week. And Ecklers mailed it to me USPS and the best part was the postage charge was the exact amount stamped on the package - $4.76
