I sure hope this helps.
thanks Curt. So, if the slit was exactly 6 inches long you would be able to slide the backing cardboard in it nice and tight?.

I'm going to have some choices for one of the sides on the outside of the cover. Either Old School Flames, or Stars and Stripes, or a longhorn steer, or a Christian Cross, or chevy bowtie, or a Canadian Flag. Correction, only the chevy bowtie will be offered. This will also have the fanatics username.
The other side will all have a tooled SSR and some other corner design tooling.

Reason: narrow down choices

Sounds Mega- to me, Sandy . . . you are most welcome.
As far as the width of the openings are concerned . . . I would suggest a tad over 6 inches (about 1/16th but no more than 1/8th) for clearance of both the checks and the ledger since mine seem to be exactly 6 inches in width. Maybe others could measure their checks and ledgers and offer some input.

I think what I'll do for the books that have the binding along the long side is not cut a slice for it but just let it slip in behind the interior leather piece. Thanks again Curt. And thanks for the feedback Beth. The more the better.

Some check books also have a thin plastic flap to keep from writing the same thing on subsequent checks--these have carbon receipts instead of check stubs. Maybe someone has already mentioned this and I didn't see it?

this is news to me, so thanks for the heads-up. And this flap is secured to the outer edge of the cover? I was hoping my cover wasn't going to end up too thick. I'm not sure what material I would use for this flap if required.
Is there anything else I should know? I have been constructing the cover in my mind all week, trying to work out the kinks

Yes, the flap is attached at the bottom to the back cover (inside). If it would help, I can mail you a used cover (it's just a cheap plastic thing that we get when we order new check blanks). If you want me to do that, PM your snail mail address.
If needed, we could get by without the flap (especially if I'm the only one) and just carry a small plastic flap from an old checkbook cover.

News to me too, Sandy.
I just checked my seven checkbook covers and not one has that feature. Possibly because I use the separate ledger at the top and not the two-part checks Rte66 is referring to.
Suggestion . . . to prevent added bulk as well as added expense, possibly a poll to determine need may help?

I think I'll forgo the flap, like they say Ya Can't Please Everyone If I stitch in the plastic piece it may crack and that would be crappy. So, that's that - executive decision made. I can move on.. Thanks for the input

I think I'll go ahead and make myself a cover so that y'all can see what train of thought I'm on with these things. They will all be chocolate brown and gold, using three different types of cowhide. I guarantee you will get almost as many compliments on it as you do on your SSR And then you'll want to get one for your spouse and parents and.......
.
I'll report back with pictures.

MWC, OK
Nope, you're not the only one! I rely pretty heavily on that flap as well. But I can carry a stunt-double flap pretty easily. Totally worth it to move up to a fanatic-style leather cover.
I'll wait for some photos or artistic renditions before I decide which cover will appeal to me most... they all sound pretty fantastic.

as far as the flap, you could tuck it in behind the book and then just pull it out when needed, just keep the one off your old cover! The area in behind can also be used to stuff your cold hard cash

Yeah, like I said, if I'm the only one or one of a very few, we can make do by slipping in a thin piece of plastic--don't want to over complicate this process.

cutting has begun So far it's been all in my head, thinking and planning. Oh, and shopping for the correct leather! Today I was able to start sketching and cutting. It's getting closer...

I have been making head-way with the tooling. I'm still tweaking the size of the inlays but have finally settled on the corner work...............you'll see, just wait. I've got a few covers on the table right now, I hope to have them dyed and stitched by later this week. I'm excited to show them off

I have not been following this thread since early on, but i can see that I am going to have to retire my 1984 Olympic Logo check book. Can't wait to see what you have to offer.

You know when you get an image in your head? It's perfect of course, no matter how difficult the idea. And as you sweat out the process you realize "what was I thinking?" But then as you approach the final product you can't believe you actually pulled it off!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, it's like that

I know EXACTLY what you mean! It's the same way with my silver work...& you're likeWOW...did I really DO that! Cool! Can't wait to see your work!
Getting images IN my head is far too easy (plenty of room in there!)... getting images OUT is harder for me.
After seeing all the cool paint jobs and little customizations at the Florida Rally, I've got all sorts of ideas floating around in there... and no talent to get them out.
