100 mph SSR

So I was thinking...

I never drive over 100 mph and most of my driving is on city streets with a limit of 50.

So, if I wanted to modify my 03 auto SSR to beat up on Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers and rice rockets on city streets without smoking the tires or exceeding the limit, yet be able to travel the highways at 80 but never more than 100,

just what mods such as rear end gears, transmission, etc makes sense under these constraints?

Put on a pair of red high heels.. it helps with the angle of attack on the gas pedal!!!

But seriously... I've changed my gears to 4.56...Computer tune, lowering springs, sway bar, the Trailblazer extra bar.. but other than that.. stock as far as the engine goes ()

Played with a Ferrari a couple of weeks ago on PCH.. Heck he could have blown me away.. but with a little aggressive driving.. we had fun chasing each other down the road.

I'm "quick" between stop lights. Can do 100 lickety split. Will perform a test and tune this spring at the track where it's safe.

Mods (that count): 456 gears, '02 Z06 cam, computer tune. Just added a high stall converter

With 4.10 gears, a tune , a better exhaust, a vette servo and little effort of my right foot, my 04 can reach 100 MPH easily.

If ya wanna have fun, take 'em out to the wiggly rooad and then run 'em. Pure Speed don't count, then.... They'll never see your brake lites if you work it right...

HMMMM!
have been thinking along these lines as well
4:10 or 4:56s, tune, Corvette servo & Mike's exhaust when it becomes available.
Don't necessarily want to open the motor
have a stock '04 auto Slingshot
Most driving is in town but I do do some long distance highway on occasion

Would like to hear some commentary/opinions from those that have done it on
- Upside/downside 4:10 vs 4:56 (fuel mileage impact & highway higher rev drone, etc.)
- Which gear supplier (American's 4:56s hard to come by??? or does someone have a source) have you successfully used
- What to look out for & what not to do?

Thanks for your help

4.56 gears, Tune, high stall converter. You will be amazed at the dramatic difference 0-60 and higher.

Engine tune, New exhaust system, 4.56 gears, lower it a little, if that does not do it, get yourself an 05, 6 speed and hang-on

And if you want it to bark with the new goodies, add an aftermarket exhaust.

I agree definitely on the gears, tune, and converter to help launch the truck. To gain mid and high end power the 5.3 really needs a cam change, though you have to be careful of the grind. Then if it was me, I'd have a 150 hp nitrous oxide system on a simple momentary switch to bring in as the need arose. For not a lot of $ you'd have a very formidable street combo!

Thanks and keep em coming

Topspin,

You mentioned in another thread that with the taller General Grabbers on the rear, I would need 4.88s to equal the effect of 4.56s on the stock tires. With the constraints I noted, would you consider going tighter yet? Or would the revs either be uncomfortable on the freeway or just murder gas mileage around town?

Someone who has 4:10s said he decided not to go with the Corvette servo to avoid harshness and was able to address the shift with the performance tune he had done.

As to road racing, I haven't found any curved roads in South Florida and all the straight ones have a state trooper every 100 feet.

Keep the ideas coming.

Dans, what is the actual diameter of the tires you're running?

We went with 4:10 gears, corvette servo, PCM tune, exhast.
Had the servo installed before the PCM tune, so can't comment on how the tune did by itself.
Love to go from stop-light to stop-light.

Topspin,

Tire Rack lists the General Grabber 295/45x20 as having a 30.5" diameter.

I just curious about the RPMs (and MPG loss) you are seeing with the 4.10 and 4.56 gears at say 70MPH. Is everyone running 87 or a higher octane gas?

I considering modifiying my air filter to either the Callaway http://www.ssrfanatic.com/forum/175689-post21.html or K&N air intake mods.

While I am leaning toward the Callaway mod with a K&N filter insert, it looks a little cheesy, especially the rubitex "sealing" system. Also, if I don't like it, I can't "fix it". Anyone know if "someone" is offering an aftermarket stainless steel/aluminum version, or do I need to pull out the tig rig and make my own?

Well with enough money you can beat up on Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers, Even the new super charged 2010 Camaro and still keep your driveability, Gas mileage and cold ac but forget about facing off with a rice rocket, I run 11.50 last year and on a great day with the best air and a tail wind I might be able to run 10.90's but a friend I race with has a so called rice rocket and he runs 9.30's at 153, His friend runs low 8's at 170 so stick with beating up the cars and trucks

Rice rocket

I meant 4 wheel rice rockets, not the two wheel type.

And I only have to get them the first 1/8th mile, not on the top end.

Supercharge it , Its the best bang for the buck , it will turn the ssr from an overweight slouch .to a lean mean machine that goes like a scared cat,yet very drivable and sedate when wanted, like a wolf in sheeps clothing

You might want to do a search under 4.56 gears. I found this was a quick search,
