Surf City is beautiful but looking for somewhere closer

Huntington Beach is my favorite place to be, I absolutely love the loacation (who wouldn't). However making the 4000 mile roundtrip in a 4.56 gear equipped auto may be unrealistic and unhealthy for my bank account with the price of petrol . I really don't want to pile those kind of miles on if I can avoid it.

But from what I'm hearing hear, I should be ok to go ahead and get the gears changed and then drive some distance to get the tune?

Still looking for the closest location to do the tune though. If anyone can point me to somewhere closer than the beautiful state of California I would appreciate it.

You can drive as far as you want, I would still thank they are a lot of shops close to you that would have no trouble tunning your SSR, It being a SSR has nothing to do with the tune, The guy that tuned mine the first time never seen one but had no trouble tunning it, Call some of the shops and tell them what you need and if they say we don't do performance tunes ask them if they know someone that does, I can't see someone that changes gears that don't have a tuner to reset the speedometer, It would be best to find a place to do the gears and the tune at the same time

I think you'd be very surprised. I've only heard of two. Wester's and PCMforless.com, Bryan Herter. I searched forever before I was able to get it done. Something about the 05-06 SSR's, w/ 4.56... I can't tell you exactly why though. It has to do with communication between the computer modules.

Or you can do what I did [also have an '05 auto] and have somebody locally do the gears, then ship your computer off to get it recalibrated. The speedo is whack without the tune, so is your gas mileage and other settings, like traction control, get confused and can start throwing errors as well.

The thing is with the 05/06, the only place I've heard of that can get the speedo recalibrated correctly on an auto is pcmforless. That's where I sent mine and it's spot on.

Downtime was about 48 hours - took the modules [there are 2] out on a Tues. afternoon, overnighted and had them recalibrated on Wed., then overnighted back for Thurs - had it running by lunch. Had them change several other settings while they had it and I'm really pleased. Great guys to deal with. And, if you want to make other changes in the future - say you get different tires like I'm about to - they'll only charge a small fee to make further changes.

When I did mine, they did not have any SSR cores available for swap. If they have those now, you would have no downtime, so ask about them when you call.

Good luck and have fun smoking those tires!

P.S. - Lesson learned......start a rear tire fund the day after your tune, you'll need them faster than you think!

Be careful with swapping cores. If you do, you'll need to go through the security re-learn and then go to the dealer to get the crank position re-learn done.
