Wouldn't this look awesome in a SSR
409-sucp_0912_18_z-merlinx_409_engine_prototype-merlin_block.jpg

World Products unveils new aluminum 409 block
Nearly 45 years after Chevrolet installed the last 409 in a passenger car, World Products announces a brand-new 409 engine block that is actually cast from aluminum. Working in conjunction with noted 409 engine guru Lamar Walden, World took the opportunity to make numerous improvements to bolster the engine’s strength while also allowing contemporary engine builders to produce big output numbers.

The new block maintains the unconventional 64-degree deck angle of the original and accepts factory-style water pumps and mounting brackets, but inside, changes have been made. The bores have been set at 4.50 inches, up from the Chevy 409’s 4.3125 inches, and the camshaft has been raised .250-inch to make room for larger-stroke rotating assemblies; this change allows stroke of up to 4.750 inches, where the factory 409 could only accommodate 4.00 inches. Main-bearing journals have been upgraded to four-bolt caps and use modern high-performance bearings. The new engine block is 140 pounds lighter than an iron Chevrolet casting and can be used to build up to 632 cubic inches of W-engine power.

I would absolutely love to stuff a 409 with a 6-71 blower in an SSR!

The 409 is the sexiest mill Chevy ever made, IMO.

I wonder if this new 409 would rev higher than 5500 RPM's without scattering like the originals did.

Hell I remember back in the 60's as a young kid I though the 409 was the most coolest looking of any engine anywhere.

Take the time to watch some of the Videos.

I watched mostly the Engine Videos. One Video is of a Small Block with over 700 HP.

Hello Guys: That does sound cool to have a 409 under the hood of our SSR's!
I really think it's the image we all had back in 1962 for me! It was June 1962,Leon Fox just got his exhaust dumps put on his new black 1962 SS Impala 4speed and Bob Scatina, just got his beautiful new Ford Gal 500 deep burgandy 2dr hdt with a 406 honking V-8 under the hood,he also just made ready the exhaust dumps. I could hear them making their practice runs in Bremerton,Wa.airport
while I unhooked my dumps on my beautiful 57 corvette, that I had to steal from my neighbors driveway, put on a set of slicks and drove into the pit area where everyone was getting their drag racers ready to make their practice runs before the 1320 event started.BTW.I got caught drinking with a bunch of guys a few weeks prior and my dad said he was going to sell my baby,1957 corvette,so I figured, what the hell,I never had a chance to race it,so I kept a spare key in my wallet and took it from my Dads best friends driveway a few blocks from our home.Sorta a good/bad memory. Mean while back at the ranch,Leon and Bob were getting ready to race, man their cars sounded good, they both had them tuned to the tee!The first run Leon (409) won by about a foot! The second run
Bob won by about half a fender. Those guys were always trying to beat one another
for years at the old drag strip, now it's an official Bremerton Raceways sanctioned NHRA drag strip.Memories, thanks for jogging the old beannie, buddy!

PS:RRR: Your'e "R" is awesome looking,love the candy burgandy two-tone,plus your mods,great looker buddy!!

Memories.....

My BIL bought a '62 SS 409/409 convertible white/gold in the spring of '62. What a gorgeous piece of machinery.......which led me into '63 when I bought red/red SS 300/327 2dr hd/tp. My BIL's buddy had a '61 chevy ??/348 convertible was a screamer at the strip.

We raced most every Wednesday at Fonda NY, an 1/8 mile strip using the SLEEPY namesake. That came from the first time my BIL was at the lights, they changed, he didn't move......everyone thought he was asleep......hence the name.

'61 SLEEPY I
'62 SLEEPY II
'63 SLEEPY III

Those were the days.......

That '62 hasn't been driven in 35 years......has just a litle over 10K miles on it stored in the cellar of his home. My BIL never sells anything.....bought a bulldozer to clear a lot for his new house in 1978, still owns it. He drives my sister nuts.

Unfortunately he has some sugar problems and had a couple angioplastys. I see him every summer and we rehash the old days. Loves to break chops...I said to him 5 years ago.....you've got one foot in the grave, and the other on a banana peel.....you better sign that '62 over to me while your still vertical.

He says...."I'll drive it in the pond before I give you anything"......just what I'd expected to hear from him. Great guy.
