Last weekend I was at a Chevy dealership nearby and got into a SSR discussion with the salesman. It seems that the manager there has a FPR SSR with a 6 speed auto in it.Must be one of the Allison transmissions.Just some cool trivia to pass on to the gear heads out there...later

I think he was funnin ya or didn't know what he was talking about. Definately not an Allison too big for an SSR.

Brian, I think you had a salesman who was blowin smoke. The Allison is HUGE, so couldn't fit. Not being very knowledgeable about transmission I have no idea if it would be possible do a conversion to a 6 speed auto similar to the one used in Corvettes and Camaros, but it would have been a serious challenge.
I've had some pretty good stories over the years, especially the first winter. One salesman in Edmonton was telling me about the runflat tires, had another in Edmonton tell me only 500 were built the first year. Asked him why the serial number I was looking at was in the 2500 range - couldn't explain that.
Had one salesman last year tell me Chevy never built any two-tones, so mine must have been custom painted by the dealer if I got it that way.

GM would love to see this one!
I work for the company that builds the Duramax 6.6 for GM. They have long said the reason they can't put the Duramax in SUVs and other vehicles is the size of the Allison. It is an enormous transmission, it would take a very dramatic change to the console, seats, and even the storage area for the top when it is down. It must be a different transmission.

Whatcha wanna bet the salesman can't count beyond four.
I agree that the salesman may have been doing a little story telling, there is a lot of fabrication and electrical work to perform to fit the 6 speed automatic into the SSR chassis, I would be very interested in seeing this if it has been done.
the 6L80 trans would fit with minimal mods if any at all to the floor, but the problem is making it work as that would require the TCM/PCM change and then rewire all of it up together.
I.m sure it could be done with enough money, but I don't think the benefit would justify the cost

OK..OK...I better go back and do my research. It was at Pike Wheaton Chev in Red Deer.I get up that way every couple of weeks or so.Dogone salesmen..is my face red...I said it must be a manual if is a 6 speed but he insisted it was auto...I'll keep you folks posted
No need for a red face, you did the right thing bringing the rumor/claim to the board, for knowledgeable friends to examine. We're always interested in what people are saying about the SSR.
