Anyone use a boost guage from Nordskog?

has anyone used the boost guage from Nordskog Performance Products? I got them and a friend of mine is installing them, but he can't get it to work. I bought this guage

Nordskog Performance Products

and this sender unit

Nordskog Performance Products

S8424 Fuel & Boost Pressure Sending Unit Kit, 0-16 PSI

How can the same sender unit be used for fuel and boost? maybe he has it hooked up wrong. Any inputs?

Genaris: You have had more than your share of trouble getting your instrumentation working.

A sending unit can be used to measure the pressure of EITHER boost or fuel pressure, no problem, I would think, if it was designed for contact with either air or liquid fuel.

Where has your friend tapped in to get the boost pressure?

Did he follow the wiring instructions precisely?

I wisgh though that you had gotten some advice from folks on this forum before purchasing. The sending unit and gauge you purchased are both very reasonably priced - maybe too reasonably priced. I know that the Auto Mater Nexus units I installed on the SSR I just sold were FAR more costly, but they have always worked exactly, and as precisely, as I could have wanted.

In addition, I wonder why the salesperson who sold them to you did not mention that it would have been remarkably easy to get BOTH boost and vacuum on ONE gauge. You would simply used a sender that reads absolute versus relative pressure, so it could read either boost or vacuum, and a gauge that can display, and is CALIBRATED DIFFERENTIALLY, from minus 25 inches of Mercury ("Hg") to 0 inches Hg, and then 0 psi boost to 15 psi boost. That is the arrangement in my SSR, and it is VERY useful.

Is it too late to return these items and start again?

I think that is wise. Too many issues already, prior to them even being in use!

I would really urge you to get:

- Sender that handles both vacuum and boost

- Gauge that handles both vacuum and boost. They exist. BUt, be sure to get one that is calibrated [properly with a DUAL display scheme: inches of mercury for vacuum, and psi boost for boost. Tis is VERY convenient for all sorts of diagnostics and testing.

Think too about how well the display fits with the interior of your SSR, and also usability ergonomics. I see you are favoring digital versus analog sweep. Note that the digital MUST be "dampened" by slowing down its rate of display change in order for it to be readable as your boost changes! That means a built-in delay (like a digitial speedometer has a delay that you really notice). You may also find that reaidng those digits undern "exciting conditions" is harder than you think, whereas the human eye and brain absorb relative sweep position very easily and quickly.

Pay lots of attention to the color of the display background AND digits. If they clash with, or are close enough to suggest tried-to-match-but-missed, your other instruments, you may be disapponted. One "blue" is not the same as another "blue", especially if a different lighting mechanism is being used.

Think long and hard about where you mount it. Soke places are easy to see even under exciting (high acceleration) conditions, or at night, while others are pretty tough. Also, some are easily reversible if you decide you picked the wring spot, while others leave permanent scars.
