Any suggestions please.....I am having the Bosal 5" Tips installed Friday and am debeating on replacing the stock muffler with a Flowmaster 44 or 40 ?? not sure. My objective is to achieve the Glasspack sound of the good old days, not a loud obnoxious, just a nice deep throaty rumble, like to hear the tunes and talk at the same time. Question is....will the Tips do the job alone? Thanks for you input.

Why don't you try the tips first for a few days and see what you think. I put just the tips and really like it. I'm not going to change a thing. You can always put the muffler on later if your not happy with it. Mine is a 6 speed and they do sound different and I have never driven an automatic so I can't tell you what they sound like.
Tom
I have the Super 44 being installed in a couple weeks... I've had a few member recommend getting the 5" tips at the same time... I'm sort of on the other side of the fence... Muffler first... tips second... but why put it up twice when you can go for it all at once????? Hummmmm.....
Good luck... let us know what you think when you're done.
i have the flowmaster 40 which sounded which had the ole deep toned glass pack sound. i just added the 5" bosel tips and it really sounds super. glad i did both.

I'm very happy with the Stock System plus the Bosals. Nice mellow tone while not being too loud.
! ! with Tom . . . try the tips first and then add the Flowmaster later if your feel the need.

I received my Bosal tips yeaterday and just got back from the exhaust shop. He is going to put on a Flowmaster next Monday afternoon. I asked him about the Magnaflow and he said that if I wanted, he would put it on first and then put on a Flowmaster to see which one I liked the best. His personal opinion was that I'll like the Flowmaster better. Really looking forward to Monday...
I just read your thread. As others have suggested, try the 5" Bosal tips first. We both have 05's and that was the first year that GM put the LS 2 engine in them. The stock exhaust in them has a lot more rumble then the older model trucks. I think that is the main reason why folks with older trucks are putting new mufflers on. They want to get the tunes from their exhausts that we may already have. That and the fact that they might need new mufflers. As I've mentioned in some earlier threads, I had the OEM tips with the diffuser holes on the inside taken off a couple of months ago and put on the 5" Bosals. There was a noticeable improvement in the rumble and I find that I don't need to replace the muffler AND as an extra which no one has mentioned the 5" tips have given my R more power because the opening of the tips is larger and there is no back pressure on the exiting exhaust. At least I think that's the reason. Now, I have to apply more pressure to the brake pedal when approaching red lights because the engine just wants to run. Try the tips first on your 05. I really think that may be all you need and when your muffler wears out you're going to have to put a new one on anyway, so you can explore the muffler situation then. I hope my advice is not too late.

Thanks for the advice, I did exactly as you suggested and am very pleased. The $$ I saved goes towards MrVette girl, "Lonnie" frenched taillights !!!! Thanks for your input !
Mike in AZ has 5" exhaust tips in polished stainless. I think the Bosals are chrome plated. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the stainless steel will outlast the chrome by a longshot. Well worth the extra $ IMHO.
I just had mine installed this morning and I LOVE IT! The growl is perfect under power and it prrrr's like a mean kitten at idle. What else is nice is there is no back-pressure sputter, and it is fairly quiet at normal speeds. But, get in the gas and WOW! It's cool! It sounds like my old 1972 Vette with side pipes.
I will be posting a before and after video clip later tonight (assuming I get time to edit it).
BTW... my install cost $100 - but I got a discount too... it took about 2.5 hours to install. Most of the time spent making sure the tips we're centered and aligned properly. Luckily this was a neighbors shop that did it for me and he had me there to approve and help ok the final positioning before welding. Again... I love it!

I have a question here..........I am thinking of upgrading my stock '03 and part of the upgrade will be the exhaust system. AutoAnything has a Flowmaster cat-back, Is this system better for performance enhancement or is just putting on a new Flowmaster muffler sufficient?
Also, does anyone know if changing out the existing exhaust with the Flowmaster cat-backis 'bolt off/on'? Or is there cutting/welding involved?

Hey Ciege
I have an 04 and a couple years ago I replaced my stock muffler with a flowmaster super 44 and stock tips with bosal. It really sounds great. I have gotten countless compliments on my new sound. When mine were changed out cutting and welding was involved. The super 44 is several inches shorter than the stock muffler and the only way to go is to get your bosals welded on. You will be pleased with the new sound. Enjoy

Be sure and paint the inside of the Bosal Tips or they will rust. Love the sound but installed my tips this spring and tips have rusted on the bottom where the water drains out. Several on form have said to paint. Denny
So I noticed on the BosalPerformance.com web site that there is only one 5" tip, PN 247-5013. Is this the one that yous are using? They have lots of different tips. What makes this one the right one for that deep throaty sound?

Interesting comment Tom. When I bought the '06 6sp I could not believe the huge difference in sound from my '05 automatic. The '06 has so much more growl and burble. I am unsure why as both were stock and I am taking into consideration the differences in up/down shifting. I have since sold the '05 but would definitely have wanted to give her sound more oomph. The '06 has enough grunt for me although I might consider tips along the way. I prefer the sound of lurking danger as compared to rat a tat brashness. I would like to get together with Tugboats stock '05 6sp and compare.
As to the original post there was a thread along the way where it seemed some preferred the sound of the 40 over the 44 but as always sound is very personal taste.

Has anyone tried eliminating the muffler altogether and just running a straight pipe(s) in place of the muffler?
It was me.. I removed the muffler altogether and anyone who has heard the results will agree that it is incredible. The total cost was just under $18.00
The sound inside the cab is nice too. You can easily listen to a conversation or the radio without being drowned out by resonance from a high dollar muffler.
You are welcome to PM me about the process, which took just under a half an hour.
PS. I have had it this way for over two years now with no issues.
