Contemplating a Flow Master 40?

Just had one installed today. Has a better and more throaty sound than stock. Couldn't tell any performance difference.

Note!!! The sound at 70 mph is a LOT higher than stock. Not sure if I can hack it or not! This is on a 2004 model.

I might try coating it with Zaino. Hey, if it works on billiard balls - who knows?

Hi Don...

Thanks for adding to the forum the difference at 70mph volume levels of the Super40 on a 2004 5.3 liter.

I can absolutely tell you that on my 2006 the muffler you got from me was only marginally louder than stock; it was barely even noticable.

This is good info for those pursuing this muffler on either a 2004 (apparently much louder) or a 2006 (not much louder than stock).

Question similar question . . . .

Thinking about using the "x" pipe on my new '06 with two mufflers (true duals). Will probably increase the pipe size, but stay with the same tips. Had a Magnaflow on the '04 and liked it, but wanted a throatier, growlier sound from my duals . . . . should I go with a Flowmaster or a Magnaflow again (and what size)? Do larger tips affect the sound and if so how much ?

Inquisitive basturd, aren't I ?

Cool Flowmaster40

Have a stainless steel 40 series Flowmaster on my '04 Ultraviolet and it is louder than stock, was trying to see a performance kick with the muffler,a hi-perf MAF,and a green air filter. Now I hear K&N is making a FIPK for the 03s/04s.--

I had a Magnaflow with 5" tips. You DO NOT want 5" tips. You will have to hang them lower then usual, and if they get too hot they WILL melt your plastic. The tip behind the drivers side was doing a damn fine job of trying to melt my bumper.

Please note I said trying,.. I switched them out to Flowmasters with the 4" tips last week. Its much better.

Don-
Just finished waxing the Silver Belle with Zaino. I can't believe the shine. It is a very good product.

Another thing that you will like is how long it lasts! If you wash with the Zaino car wash and Z6 it pretty often, it will amaze you how long you can go before having to do the whole procedure again, especially if the vehicle is garage kept! If you get bugs on it, drop through the car wash and don't use anything except the rinse cycle. They will fly right off and the nonuse of soap will keep from downgrading your Zaino protection.

5" tips are GREAT!
I can't believe the Magnaflow (was it the entire catback system?) wasn't throaty enough.....

Thumbs up Went with Magnaflow . . . .

Joe, my muffler man, once again voted against Flowmasters for my truck. He also said he wouldn't recommend the x-pipe. I was concerned about the resonance everyone was talking about.

I went with a Magnaflow (stainless) and have a great sound upon acceleration and no resonance at road speed. At rest just idling, very pleasant "chug-ca-chug" Just what I wanted.

$213 out the door in 30 minutes !!

Thanks for all your comments. I'd be lost without all the excellent suggestions and ideas I've discovered here.

Same. This is my first experience with Magnaflow. Bought it blind from other owners recommendations. I am very impressed. I'd buy them again. I have Borlas on my Mustang, a 40 Flowmaster on the Wrangler. My advice on exhaust systems is try to hear them (live in person) if you have that convenience. And buy what you like. You're the one that has to live with it.

BTW...5" tips. Position them correctly, test drive and retighten. They will be fine. And they can always be welded.

Sound

Install X pipe and MAGNAFLOWS. I like the set up and sound. Good idle sound and talk if asked to.

Concur with others: I have a 2004 with Dynatech headers (jet hot coated) with free flow cats. I stayed with the 21/2 piping. cut the single outlet from the headers and made duals with the Magnaflow with built in x pipe. It sounds great. Slightly louder at low excelleration but when you get on it there is a noticable difference and its a good sound not very loud but very throaty. I welded it all so there are no leaks.

My Flowmaster 40 installed on a stock system on my '06 6spd sounds better. A bit throat-ier but not objectionable to me at any spd. Mine was less than 2bills to have installed. Glad I stuck with the stock tips they look great anyway.. I still contemplate a straight pipe every now and then..

I have been putting Flowmasters on my pickups for years and went with a Magnaflow with the X built in and 2 1/2 pipe, from advise on this sight, and love the sound it puts out. I have a nice deep sound at wot, and it smooths out when out on the road. I may be a Magnaflow convert now.

I just wanted to clarify this post....Zainossr is talking about a Flowmaster SUPER 40, not the regular 40...they are two completely different mufflers, different characteristics, different sound, different restrictions, etc.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

Jeff,
Haven't really gotten into the '06 hard yet . . . . Only has 600 miles or so, but the difference between and '04 and a '06 is phenomenal to me (probably mostly mental ) On hot pavement I CAN'T prevent the tires from chirping from low to 2nd (automatic) and if pushed will chirp again from 2nd to high. THe sound seems deeper and "menacing"

I had Joe's Muffler do the work (up in your neck of the woods) just off Avenue M between 10th West & Sierra Highway, across the street from the Orco Tools Bldg. Joe says there will be a slight increase in performance because the exhaust will leave the engine easier and faster, but my son, a student at MMI (Motorcycle Mechanics Institute) in Phoenix, pooh poohs this. He says unless there is a corresponding increase in the input of air to the engine, it does little good to evacuate the exhaust better. Probably his sneaky way of trying to convince me to supercharge her.

I sure like the sound of the Magnaflow though and Joe also said larger tips wouldn't amplify the sound enough to bother with. He sure knows how to turn away more work, huh ? ? (he also seemed opposed to putting the larger tips on because of the heat factor around the plastic bumper).
